Unhappy what do u think of violin in a rock band?

i play guitar and violin and last year we made a band with some friends and i had to play violin (with a few pedals)

we used to play "wish u were here" "creep" radiohead white stripes rolling stones and our own songs

i wanted to know what people think of this instrument!

Re: what do u think of violin in a rock band?

To my mind it's not so much the instrument but the musician that makes the difference. If the musician is truly inspired and has a pasion for the music, his choice of instrument is secondary. Somebody could play "Stairway" on the oboe, and if they were a true fan, loved the music, and had a passion for conveying all the feeling and emotion, I'm sure they'd do an awesome job.

I have an old CD (1986 or 87 I think) called "A Classic Case". It's the London Philharmonic Orchestra coverling all of Jethro Tull's hits.. it's just amazing.

Oh, By the way.. Electric Violins are very cool.. I have been a huge fan of Jean Luc Ponty for years.

As a point of trivia... The first instrumnet mastered by one Mr. Eddie VanHalen was the violin. He credits his mastery of the violin as having a profound influence on his guitar style, particularly his use of hammer on/pull offs and unusual scales and modes.

The Violin can rock! King Crimson's use of the violin was important to their distinctive sound in the mid 70s. And even Zappa used violin for a bit! And don't forget the Who's Baba o' Riley.

Re: what do u think of violin in a rock band?

violin is a great instrument, though not to common in rock. But i suggest in the band u not only play the violin. Like be like Violin and Percussions, or Violin and synthesizer. You know.

Re: what do u think of violin in a rock band?

Violin is a wonderful instrument and can indeed rock. Many bands have been already mentioned: I can add Velvet Underground, just for example. It just depends on how creative you are, Rock broken its guitar-only chains many years ago, fortunately!

Re: what do u think of violin in a rock band?

Search in Kazaa for:

Brazen Abbot "Day Of the Eagle"

You'll see what's rock with violin.

Re: what do u think of violin in a rock band?

well... i don't really know... i mean, it doesn't really depend on what instruments are used, rather how they're used... like John Cale's viola in Velvet Underground... I love it!
But, then again, i sort of think fiddle is a nice instrument... probably because i know this old man who plays the fiddle like the devil himself though.
