Buying guitar strings...

I'm trying to pick up some strings similar to the ones Gilmour has used. The site I got the information from was from this site. Assuming that informations is correct - I found the acoustic Earthwood Lights, no problem, but his electric GHS Boomers are custom. The closest I could find were these. Is that a close match? Has anyone used these - if so, how's the sound on them?

Then there's the possibility the above information was wrong, if so - can anyone direct me to more accurate info? Thanks in advance.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

Dude just buy ernie ball electric strings and elixer acoustic and you'll get a great sound. I say don't worry so much about trying to sound exactly like Dave.

No, it's not "sounding" like him that I care so much (quite near impossible to do that), but if he used these strings, I'd just like to see how they are - I would think they're good.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

try the Dean Markley - Blue steel strings.....but anyway if you use the same brand as dave or not that's not the most importat factor for getting his guitar sound....

Re: Buying guitar strings...

perhaps hockyfan is just looking for the same feel as what would be similar to the way Dave's guitar feels. not necessarily a sound issue.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

Hockey Fan.. play what you like.. I've used the Boomers before, I liked them, they are a good string and the set you picked are fairly close to Dave's...not exact but close..

I'm currently using....

Strat: Fender bullets.. 11 to 48

Tele: Dean Markley Blue Steel medium weights.

Les Paul: Ernie Ball Regular Slinky

Dean: Dean Markley Nickle Steel meduim weight..flatwound.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

Fender .10s here, usually the stainless type but I usually can't be arsed to tell a difference if I accidentally put the nickel ones on.

And I think Hockyfan was only trying to get a little experimental with strings, I've thought of using Dave's strings as a toss-up sometimes.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

To actually get that vintage vibe/stratocatser sound you *need* GHS Boomers.

It doesnt really matter what gauge, even though Dave uses his own gauge, its just what he feels comfortable using.

They are available everywhere.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

Just put my first set of Earthwood's on mine the other day, have to say that I love them. I've also liked GHS Phosphor Bronze and anything Dean Markey. All those are good strings, but most people I know (myself included) hated the Elixirs. How many times have you gone in the acoustic room and seen plastic flaking off of the strings? They're made to last for a long time, but they seriously sacrifice tone and I think they feel weird too.

Re: Buying guitar strings...

I like elixers, they are definitely the best strings for acoustics IMHO. they have great tone and last much longer than any others...

I admit the plastic peeling thing gets annoying on electrics and I find them a little too smooth for my tastes, I need grip darnit.. They still sound great to my ear though...

In conclusion, Elixers for acoustic=super, Elixers for electric=almost super

I'm quite fond of D'Addario strings. Feels great, and are long-lasting....
