Beck is strange. During his stint with the Yardbirds, they recorded their greatest hits and skyrocketed to fame. But Beck seems to be a loner, and doesn't like being tied to anyone else.
So despite being universally acknowledged as one of the all-time guitar greats (and rightfully so) he hasn't achieved the status of Clapton or Page. He's like more of a glorified studio musician.

Besides being a brilliant guitarist, he owns some great hotrods, so he's one of my idols.

so would you then recommend the Yardbirds years over his solo career? Because i heard that he did a lot of synchronized, techno style beats as a background for his most recent stuff. Post- 70's that is (i like a bit of what i've heard so far of Blow by blow).

"Synchronized" beats eh? You mean programmed. Yes, a lot of his latter-day stuff heads in that direction. If that turns you off then by all means start with the Yardbirds material.

"Did you hear what mama said?"
"I hear it."

You gotta admit, what he does get around to playing on P&C is absolute perfection.

Hey, Fulghum

you have to admit that most of Clapton's material is either classic blues or popy tunes and it never reaches the artistic merit of "The Pros and Cons..." This doesn't mean I don't like him. He's actually one of my favourite guitarists and my style of playing resembles his to some extent.

When I heard this story, it was that they were GOING to ask Beck to join Pink Floyd but couldn't work up the courage for fear of rejection...
Actually, there's an interview with Rick Wright(It's on pinkfloyd-co.com) where he mentions that they did ask him and "I don't remember his exact reply, but it wasn't yes!"

Hey, Poogle, thanks a million for the Beck recommendation. I've only managed to get my hands on the newer stuff ("Jeff" and "Who Else?") but it is kicking the crap out of me!
I'm lining up Dave's best against Jeff and preparing for all out war!

I hate Clapton. Incredibly overrated guitar player (but he IS good). I find his work with CREAM to be his best.
