I don't understand why this comes up on here every so often. Syd was ok, but he was nothing all that special compared with Roger. Roger is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Syd wrote some very dated material that has not stood the test of time like the work Roger, with Dave Rick and Nick did together. Give me The Final Cut over Piper, Barrett or Madcap ANYDAY. I am not saying Syd sucked, just that Pink Floyd would not even have this website or the following it does if it was not for the genuis of Roger.

And Pink Floyd wouldn't have existed in the first place if it wasn't for the genius of Syd. Even the name (on which Roger acted quite possessively in the mid-80's) was his invention.

I mean, of course Roger's lyrics are up there with the greatest writers in rock music but, as some posters have already said, it took all the members to make the legend Pink Floyd is now.

Final cut over piper. Thats funny. The album sounds like hes about to die. Roger moaning, lack of guitar, drums, keyboard, etc... Now lets look at piper. You listen to it and instantly it provokes a strong reaction.

Bu Ch Chsh, Bu CH Chsh.... er er..er er wahooooo... dooy dooy....

Syd's instrumentals, aswell as simple lyrics are quiute appealing. Whil Final Cut is so dull, it just becomes forgotten. (although "not now John" rules)

At least TFC has some real emotion to it, and some real lyrics and an actual message. Syd was nonsense. You do not seem to get TFC it seems. It is actually a very moving album with some of Dave's best solos.

Piper... "I've got a bike you can ride it if you like..." GREAT LYRICS SYD!

my opinion is that someone has to make the start and someone else makes it great.Syd was good but watters was great!!for example the church of Agia Sophia in konstantinoupolis(instanbul for those who don't know the konstantinoupolis)if it wasn't Anthemios and Isidoros then i don;t think that people would know the church as the work of art they know it now.that was what Watters did with Pink Floyd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Roger Waters is much better. Some of Barrets lyrics are so strange.

Re: Waters Vs. Barrett

Roger Keith "Syd" Barret is, IMHO, the main reason that we ever experienced a band like Pink Floyd. His impact on the others was so strong, that it went on for years after he was out of Pink Floyd. If you really listen to Wish You Where Here (the entire album), it's clear that it's not only Shine On Your Crazy Diamond that is a tribute to Syd, but the entire album. They definetly miss him and they are greatfull for his creative impact on them.

Now to trying to define whom is a better songwriter; Barret or Waters is like compareing appels and oranges. In the end it's a question of personal taste or perhaps even your present moode.

Basicly I love Barrets lyrics and music, but some times I'm more in the Waters moode so I for one can't point on one before the other. But still, I consider Barret to have had more influence on the band that most people give him credit for. Barret's spirit was with the band for years and years after his exit, makeing a strong impact on the bands music.
