Re: Waters Vs. Barrett

Each one has it's own place, is not fair to compare them, becuase Syd is mentally gone since the 60's...no one can tell what would have become of him as a songwiter or musician...or what would Waters become if Syd was sane today...

Saludos.

How can u even compare the two????

its like asking how do u like to travel, by car or horse?

The guys are soo different, that the band ditched syd.

One is writing psychodelic songs about scarlet tunics, crossdressers, and scarecrows. The other is writing about how messed up the world is and how he misses his dad.

The two are on total different sides of the universe. So its tough to compare.

People of todays generation might think that barretts songs are dumb. I think they rule! And obviously the suscess of Pink Floyd speaks for Waters.

So it should be concluded that both are good.

Re: Waters Vs. Barrett

Syd and Roger were both great lyricists and like you said its impossible to compare them. Personally I've always like the deep complexity of Waters songs though

Re: Waters Vs. Barrett

How can you compare the lyrics of a young, semi-amateur which did a couple of albums in the late sixties with the ones of an accomplished, experienced author with a 30 odd years career? We just don't know how Syd's style would have developed through the years. In the 1967-70 period, when Syd was in fact writing, Roger's stuff wasn't as brilliant as it became subsequently, and THAT is the only possible (fair) comparison. Maybe these days Barrett could have been a much better lyricist than Rog, who knows.

Re: Waters Vs. Barrett

You can't say that Syd was semi-amature his only income came from music making him a profesional. The fact that he went on to record solo shows that he was an accomplished writer without Roger or the others. But to compare them is hard if not imposible, they both valued different asspects when chossing words. Syd genrally wud disregard the meaning of a word if it sounded right for the music, hence the nonsensical rhymes that have an almost hypnotic affact. Roger is the opposit he tries to put deep gravity and mening into his lyrics which leads them to being at times harsh. Really Syd was more succcesful, Roger's lyrics sometimes only have the gravity they need when put with the music wheras Syd's tend to be musical if just read aloud. However a direct comparison is not a fair judgement.

Actually, he was. Mind you that doesn't mean he had no talent: in fact, his talent was incredibly spontaneous and bright, but his income really means nothing. They all were pretty amateurish those days, and that's what they actually say. But again, that's a testament to their sheer talent.

Re: Waters Vs. Barrett

I definitly enjoy the work and music of Roger Waters, but I also believe that the band wouldn't have gotten as far as they did without Syd. And even if they had, they wouldn't have the creepy disposition that they have now.

Well i do play guitar and i can tell you that there are much easier Led Zepplin and Bob Dylan songs to play as well as late PF songs such as: THE WHOLE FINAL CUT ALBUM!!

I however couldnt care less weather music sounds like it is easy or hard to play. If we didnt like simple songs, then you wouldnt enjoy songs like: Many obscured by clowds songs, one of these days, speak to me, breathe, Goodbye Cruel World, Is There Anybody Out There? and other good ones.

Sorry for the rude/mad tone i just have to defend my man, for i enjoy lyrics containing scarlet tunics, gingerbread men, and movements accomplished in six stages!
