[NOTE: THE VIDEO IN QUESTION HAS LONG SINCE BEEN REMOVED FROM AFG. However, I have left this thread up as a reminder of how some people have tried to take advantage of our favourite celebrities. We as Pink Floyd fans are obligated to remain vigilant to prevent this kind of exploitation, and to register our objections should something like this ever occur again.]

-----------

Dear friends:

"A Fleeting Glimpse" has gone WAY over the top. Please read the following, and then help me to take a stand against this!

Mr. Dallagnol, you need to reconsider your linking to and recommending of the "Fleeting Glimpse" site. I have sent you more detailed e-mails regarding this matter; please read them and make a decision.

Anyway, here is what is going on:

As those who have visited my website know, ever since the inception of my site, I have stated that any true fan of Mr. Roger Barrett (formerly "Syd") should respect his wishes not to associate with his past, and his wish for privacy.

Unfortunately, a site that I formerly linked to (and dropped my link a few days ago) has trampled all over this.

Many of you may already be familiar with a site called "A Fleeting Glimpse", one of the largest Pink Floyd sites on the Internet. This site now advertises a video of Mr. Barrett, shot in 1998 by a tourist in Cambridge. This is a sale for profit--both the original purveyor of the video AND the webmaster of "A Fleeting Glimpse" are MAKING MONEY from this.

Of course, this is HIGHLY UNETHICAL, and, I would strongly suspect, just barely legal, if legal at all!

The webmaster of "A Fleeting Glimpse" has responded to displeased letters with such paltry excuses as: The positive feedback greatly outweighs the negative, so that justifies it, or that if he didn't do it, somebody else would!

This is disgusting rationalisation!

What's worse, posts to his discussion board made last night which stated a negative view of the video, were deleted! This is blatant censorship, as if the sale of this video isn't bad enough! The current round of posts is still intact, but the fact that this was done at all is highly disturbing--censorship is the act of desperate individuals.

Let's not let "A Fleeting Glimpse" get away with this. I have already dropped my link to that site. I urge you all to do the same. Tell the webmaster of "A Fleeting Glimpse" that you--as a TRUE PINK FLOYD FAN--are disgusted with his actions!

Thank you very much...let's take a stand!

Signed,
FloydWaters

Interesting.

Whilst I agree that it's wrong of the Webmaster to delete any negative feedback, I can't help but feel that it is entirely within his rights to advertise and assist in the distribution of said media (hereafter known as the "I've been mad for years. Absolutely years" vid).

It's not really to my taste, but there are a million and one MPEGS doing the rounds of people caught on camera in unlikely (or, unfortunately these days, highly likely)situations. I'm sure that you've seen some yourself. Simply because it's a subject that is obviously close to your heart, FW, it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be viewed or diseminated by anyone with an interest in Pink Floyd or Syd Barrett. It's not exactly going to have legs though, is it? It's a pretty specialised subject, and I'm sure that there's not that many people that are going to pay money for it.

If this Webmaster character doesn't want to listen, that his karma. But he IS entitled to do pretty much what he wants on his site. I could rant on about "Freedom of Expression", but I won't.

What it comes down to is this:

Don't watch it.

Thank you for registering your opinion, Anonymous...though I wish I knew who you were.

I guess my main complaint, though, comes from the fact that Mr. Barrett has already paid a heavy price for stardom. He wants nothing to do with that past or with the media--and I think this all comes down to respect.

I am glad, at least, to know that you will be doing your part and not buying it, and that you recognise as a problem this guy's abridging of free expression.

A perfect example of the far-reaching consequences that are bound to occur when one starts worshipping the free market and commercialism. This is nothing short of disgusting. People don't care....they just DON'T care. Least bothered about the other person. Perfectly selfish animals are thrning others into sub-human. Best way to make money is to do something controversial. AND the WORST part is that the GENERAL PUBLIC laps it up, thereby encouraging and renewing the cycle further. When will it all end? When will greed be ever satisfied? When ever will people stop being materialistic? Enough is enough and it's time for a change!

Thank you very much, RW! Somehow I knew you would be one of the ones to respond to this.

Perhaps you would help out by e-mailing the webmaster of "A Fleeting Glimpse", or by telling any friends you have who are Pink Floyd fans.

Whatever you do, thank you very much for showing your support here.

Id have to agree wth "Floydwaters," I think that its REALLY WRONG to benefit from people like SYD BARRATT. Why people would like looking at some one who's MADand FAT and BALD, and hasn't done anythng in years and years just doesnt' make any sense to me at all....

It would be like watching a video of my DAD.

aND I don't want that!

IM WITH YOU, FLOYD WATERS!!

Brylcreemandrax, thank you for your concern. I may continue to need people like you--"A Fleeting Glimpse" has not yet made good on his promise to extricate himself from his contract, and I believe that the video is still available for order. I need people like you to write to them, to keep the pressure on, and to wake people up to what this guy is doing.

I may have celebrated prematurely. I hope that is not the case, but I really begin to wonder.
