what happened to syd's esquire..

Hi, I just made an interesting find that everyone is always asking about which is in one of my old rolling stones which has kind of an interview with Syd. Issue No. 98. December 23rd, 1971. He talks about his new guitar he bought and about the mirror disk esquire and tells where it went.

This it what it says:

He produces a guitar and begins to strum out a new version of "Love You" from Madcap. "I worked this out yesturday. I think it's much better. It's my new 12-string guitar. I'm just getting used to it. I polished it yesturday." it's a Yamaha. He stops and eases it into a regular tuning, shaking his head. "I never felt so close to a guitar as that silver one with mirrors that I used on stage all the time. I swapped it for the black one, but I've never played it."

The article has many other interesting facts about Syd sitting in the cellar with his paintings, guitars and records and a bit of things about him saying that he doesn't take acid anymore.

The pictures from that interview are interesting. Syd w/ his hair chopped off. I'd love to read the whole thing. I wonder if there's a link. Anyway, I wonder why he swapped the mirrored guitar if he was so attached to it? Maybe he was taken advantage of at one of his less than lucid moments.

yeah, it's fairly odd that he had swapped it for a guitar he didn't really like. I don't think the article is on the internet but there is an interview that I own that I have seen on the internet from Melody Maker which is a pretty interesting interview. I am sure many people have already read it but it is really nothing special. The rolling stone article that I got the information about the esquire from is much more interesting and has lots of stuff I havn't heard from the internet.

Did he sound normal in the interview? I've heard that he sometimes gave an answer that had nothing to do with the question and then actually answered the question 10 minutes after it was asked!

Yes, but he had the ability to be normal on occasion. The interview is one of those occasions (it would be pretty hard to interview someone under those circumstances).

Cool. I wish somebody could get to interview him now! THAT would be interesting. But oh well...

In one of the most recent books about him, the author stupidly visited his house in an attempt to contact him. As I recall, he got a few brusque words and a door slammed in his face.

yeah, I read that. He then left Syd a note and when he told him he'd left it Syd said, "It's nothing to do with me." He also answered the door in his underwear!

Yes, I have also heard about many people going to his door in the past 10 years or so and getting doors slammed in their faces. One strange one was that one man was actually asked in for tea.

In answer to someones question in this post. Yes, he does say a few things that don't really make sense but I really do think the writer really got good and normal answers to his questions. It is not like the Melody Maker interview from 1971 which is all over the internet(which is not fake by the way because I own a copy of that issue)
