According to Waters, it's about Syd, and the rest of the band seems to back him on that.

A rumour that I have heard a lot was that the song was written about heroin which may be completely wrong but it sure sounds like it but I doubt it.

According to Roger Waters in the WALL's commentary, it was Syd Barrett who they were trying to awaken. There really is no one at home with Syd Barrett. It's kinda sad.

Syd was a great person, and who knows, deep down he maybe is. This should be a warning: never do psychedelics if you have ANY kind of mental condition that requires attention.

Did Syd truly have one before doing LSD?

I think Comfortably Numb has a very deep meaning that far exceeds any catatonic episode. I think it's a transitional song with both the philosophical aspects of Pink's situation(Gilmour's singing) and the physical, social aspect going on outside of the wall(Waters' singing) quite seperate from eachother. I think the philosophical aspect of it is the supressed thoughts, dead/forgotten dreams(Or goals), and other negative or sentimental thoughts that were pushed into his subconcious finally coming to the surface, and before he could connect with certain aspects of his past life again, and his unfixed, supressed problems, he's taken out of his cataonic trance and more confusing things happen Last edited by Poggle Zig; 10-14-2004 at 06:53 PM.

I always thought it was about a mindframe where everything seems perfect, even though it's not - a second of perfect peace in the midst of chaos. Then, I considered it was about a rockstar suffering from stagefright - and being giving heroin, and then he is no longer scared. Then, I heard the band said it was about Syd.

To really see what Waters meant first watch the movie the Wall. Then watch it again with the commentary on and Waters, along with the 2 other directors/producers, talks about the meaning of each scene/song. So you could just fast foward to CN to hear what Waters says about it.
