Syd Barrettish

Well im a huge fan of the early pink floyd 1967-1968 and I love syd barretts work with the floyd and want to learn the theory behind the guy. I mean did he use any theory to his music, like why would he particulaly slide from 3rd to 10th fret in Astronomy Domines solo. I kinda refuse to belive everything came from the lsd use. Is there any theory in his thoughts, and did he use any special teachnique, or was it all just one big acid trip?

blues licks + r&b shuffle + echorec feedback + folky chords + pedals and pick scrapes = barrett

Re: Syd Barrettish

No, but it's far too coherent a musical statement to have been made up on drugs.

Shuffle refers to the 12/8 time signature, but more broadly it means any "swung" tempo. And r&b = rhythm and blues.

This isn`t about the solo but is very interesting.
Quote:
Barrett took his cube with little idea of what to expect and spent the next 12 hours, according to Storm Thorgerson, "lost in space". Syd seized an orange and a plum from the household fruit bowl and carried them everywhere during his trip. In his altered state the fruits came to represent the planets Jupiter and Venus. Syd imagined himself suspended in place between the two planets for hours until someone ate his plum (Venus) and his universe collapsed.
Syd came down from his trip convinced that he had encountered the full majesty of the universe and began to search for a way to express what he'd seen in his music. He often carried with him a small Times Astronomical Atlas, which included speculation from noted astronomers on the likely surface conditions of each of the planets in the solar system. Syd combined this information with allusions to astronaut Dan Dare, Pilot Of The Future (a popular strip from boys' comic The Eagle) into a string of lyrics which would, a year later, become Astronomy Domine.

Re: Syd Barrettish

Seems I read once somewhere where Syd came up with that descending chord progression in Astronomy Domine while trying to duplicate the song "Little Green Bag".

Edit: Make that Interstellar Overdrive, not AD.
