Re: ITAOT Keyboard Playing

I'm just wondering...was Mr. Wright in fact playing the keyboard on the live version of The Wall, "Is There Anybody Out There?"?

I understand that session musicians did a lot of the keyboard playing on the studio album, so I am wondering if the drastic differences I am hearing are due to the fact that it is Mr. Wright himself who is playing?

I have discovered that I GREATLY prefer this version to the studio album, because of this richer sound that it has. Some of the things that really make for a "Floydian" sound seem as though they make a brief return...I felt a distinct chill when I heard that piano come on during the instrumental part of "Run Like Hell"--it almost started reminding me in a weird way of part of "Syncopated Pandemonium", except a lot subtler and creepier. Also, the end of "Goodbye Blue Sky" was very interesting, mournful...that song creeps me out. There are many more instances I could point to, but these are some of the main ones that really got my attention. I don't know what it is, but there is a certain "signature" on these parts that makes me wonder if Mr. Wright came up with them for the concert.

Does anybody else hear this, or am I just hallucinating?

Re: ITAOT Keyboard Playing

You would be correct. Rick Wright performed The Wall with the band, but was on salary.

Re: ITAOT Keyboard Playing

Would you say that you think his presence noticeably affected the sound of the album? I think so, but I would like to know if others think so as well.

I am planning to write to him sometime...I wonder if he would like it if I told him what a new life that sound seemed to bring to The Wall. I mean, when I heard some of this stuff for the first time, my mouth just dropped open. I had NEVER imagined it, and yet it fit PERFECTLY!

Re: ITAOT Keyboard Playing

He is included as a member of the band...but what I'm wondering if anyone else notices is the tremendous difference in the sound of The Wall in ITAOT (which I personally find to be a great improvement). Would they agree that it is the altered keyboard parts that create this?

Re: ITAOT Keyboard Playing

Yes, that was a WONDERFUL surprise, wasn't it? And to think that I had put off buying ITAOT for so long because I thought it would be redundant! Boy was I ever wrong about that!
