in my personal opinion, PF never sounded like Doors to me. prolly it has something to do with definitive late 60s sound in general, when all bands used the same insruments (Hammonds etc) and more or less the same equipment. The Doors always sounded very late 60s to me, and so does early PF (1968-71)
and good lord, how i ADORE this song (Fat Old Sun) !!!!!!!!! such a mellow sweet dreamy thing...
and i need to add, that your nickname, OneSlip is one of the most beloved songs for me tooo...

thanks mate! I have discovered my version of Fat Old Sun is just an erroneous MP3. It occured when transfering a bunch of songs from hard drive to hard drive. The song contains a bit of The Doors and some Enya (LOL!). It is actually quite cool, and always manages to trip the hell out of me.

Aren't the bells in Fat Old Sun exactly the same as in High Hopes?

That mp3 you have is not erroneous, its almost definitely a trance remix, as someone else said before. Mp3's suck too. Go out and buy the album and you won't have to deal with such technicalities. I can see where you'd be confused.

One Slip, I find no resemblance in this song to The Doors. It is out of characteristic for Floyd to try to be like The Doors. It might be how the Floyd did this song that you get confused with. Alot of times I get confused with other bands who remind me of Floyd.

I cannot see many resemblances with The Doors in Fat Old Sun. Matter of fact this song has peculiar Floyd trademarks (Rick's Hammond, Dave's mellow vocals). Anyway look for extended live versions from early Seventies: the song performed live was 12+ mins long and had mind blowing instrumental sections, awesome.

There you have it, that's the story! I got the song off a friend, his version is good, mine is screwy.

Actually, I'm quite interested in hearing this "re-mix" if you still got it.

"Dude, man, the Floyd don't sound nuttin' like them Doors. You's dumb."

I think it's funny all the people who accuse others of ignorance while at the same time are commenting on something that has already been resolved. Before you comment on a thread, read the damned thing!

They fade into this Doors-like song a couple of times actually. What do you think?

I may have swerved into the answer to this long-standing mystery (or, maybe not). OneSlip got fragged by everyone for the above statement, but I've got a copy of F O S that was recorded (poorly, alas) in 1971 off a BBC live broadcast. It is over 14 minutes long (Mad Yannis alluded to this) and it does have a 3 to 4 minute solo by Rick on the Hammond that is reminiscent of the Doors extended version of "Light My Fire". Also, on this version, Dave's passionate guitar solo just kicks ass. Damn, I would give a lot to have a modern CD quality copy of this solo!! I love his solo in the studio cut, but this one is far better, IMO.(the structure, not the sound quality, obviously)

yes that is an awesome version of the song. they should have cut the breakfast song and just did a longer version of fat old sun on the lp. but i still don't think the solo sounds too much like the doors. to me anyway.
