Re: Fat Old Sun

I am curious about the song Fat Old Sun. I am also a great fan of The Doors, and everytime I hear the first change in this song - after the birds, I could almost swear that is either Pink Floyd imitating The Doors, or they pasted in some song there. They fade into this Doors-like song a couple of times actually. What do you think?

Re: Fat Old Sun

Well, for starters, I think the voice sounds just like Jim's. When they scream in the song, it sounds like a characteristic Jim scream, and then the drumming with a lot of symbols also sounds like The Doors. The guitar is not unlike any Doors sound either. When I first heard this song I thought it might be someone flipping through radio stations, and The Doors come on.. they change it, then change it back, etc.

I also catch either a little organ in the background or an imitation of an organ.. which is trademark Doors.

Re: Fat Old Sun

The organ is also the signature of Richard Wright, Pink Floyd's keyboardist. You will notice that he tends to be included in a LOT of Floyd songs, even if it is in the background. Songs ranging all the way from the more recent "Poles Apart" (from The Division Bell), to the earlier "A Saucerful of Secrets", to "Us and Them" (from Dark Side of the Moon) all include Mr. Wright playing some form of organ. I really doubt that PF would be imitating the Doors.

Re: Fat Old Sun

why would you say that the organ is trademark doors. countless bands have used organs in their songs.

Re: Fat Old Sun

Woah mates, I am not insulting Pink Floyd. I actually think this song is awesome, and in no way do I think they are "ripping off" The Doors. I did not say "because there was an organ it was The Doors". I said that it was trademark Doors because it had all the elements that would be in a Doors song, and without the organ it would be harder to convince someone that it sounded at all like a Doors song. It is not lacking any instrument that The Doors used, I did not say Pink Floyd was using an instrument they never use.. You should have read what I wrote before ripping one part of my post apart. I provided all that information to further my notion that it could be an attempt to sound like The Doors for a portion of the song. I bet some of you who responded to this post didn't even listen to that song, you just ripped me apart because you disagreed with it in some way.

I don't really know what to think about the song, I am curious as to whether others think that it is a radio being flipped through the channels?

OneSlip, I was never bashing you; I was trying to be helpful. I hope it didn't come across that way!

It doesn't sound like Doors in my opinion. Never thought it sounded like The Doors

Re: Fat Old Sun

Okay, well, I was wondering why everyone seemed to take me for a retard, so I downloaded another version of Fat Old Sun. My Floyd collection consists solely of MP3s.. I used to have Animals, Division Bell, Final Cut and Darkside, but I lost those. I have 19 of their CDs on MP3, some of them I ripped myself from CD but others I downloaded. For some reason I guess I got a version of Fat Old Sun that is edited. It is friggen cool at that, but I am pretty sure someone put some different parts of songs there. I am not 100% sure that it was edited though, because I just downloaded a Gilmour live, acoustic version so maybe it just doesn't have the cool special effects. In anyone's version of Fat Old Sun, do they have a female voice that says "Sail Away" at all during the song?

Re: Fat Old Sun

"Sail Away?"

Did you get hold of a remix? Seriously, I mean that question; it sounds to me as if a song by another artist could've been mixed in there by someone else.

Re: Fat Old Sun

yeah, that is exactly what i think it is. It is really good actually, lol, I like it more than the Fat Old Sun I downloaded. It starts out with some birds chirping, then cuts to what I was referring to before, The Doors-like sound and then cuts to a chick singing "Sail Away, Sail Away, Sail Away" then back to the birds and then cycles between those three for a bit.. The last 5 minutes or so is the actual Fat Old Sun song.
