Exclamation Can't get into PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN

I just can't seem to get into that album. I really don't know why, everybody tells me it's such a great album, but I really am not that into it. I do kinda like "Astronomy Domine", but I can't get into anything else. I think the absence of David Gilmour really is a miss, because his guitar is work is a lot better than Barrett's and I think Dave's a better singer. Barrett and Waters sound too similar when they sing. Am I missing something from this album?

You know, when I first heard this album, I was much the same - I didn't even like Astronomy Domine! But then I started listening to it more, and I began to love it. It's one of my favourite Floyd albums.

Yeah, you just need to find that certain mindset for Piper. Relaxed, not too focussed, just receptive and open. Then listen...

Yeah, it's not what we use to hear from the Floyd. It has a few nice songs, particulary Interstellar Overdrive, otherwise it's the most Beatles album of PF.

I love that album. I bought it just recently and was first introduced to albums like the wall and such, but I love it because it is a break of what people know of the floyd. They know like the wall or DSOTM and that is it. It is so different though. Truly brilliant

This is the first of the floyd I ever heard except for arnold layne and see emily play which hit many months before. This is the first album that anyone should listen to that are interested in Pink Floyd other than The Darkside Of The Moon and The Wall. I really do prefer this album to any other though I do really love the later Pink Floyd sound.

Piper is one of the best examples of 60's psychedelia. It requires a free-spirited mindset. Maybe try listening to it during/after a day's romp through the valley.......

I've never really gotten into PatGoD all that much either. I listen to it once every blue moon. You have to be in a certain type of mood to appreciate it and for me that mood is pretty rare.

I disagree. Any mood is the perfect mood for any Floyd listen. I love Piper at the Gates, one of their best earlier works.

I can listen to any Floyd album at any time--mood or time of day doesn't bother me.

its easily understandable how you cant "get int o it". i guess you have to just be a fan of the band really. i guess what im trying to say is the fact that it is a floyd release, i like it. im not saying its bad music, just needs a certain type of listener. not my first pick for listening, but still gets fair attention in my stereo.

man, even IM confused about that post

As with all of my favorite songs/artists/music I really didn't care for Piper when I first heard it. After listening to it through a few times in the background while doing something else, it just sort of sunk in. It's my favorite pink floyd album, although I'll admit the later albums were done with much more talent. Two songs that really should have been on the album were Arnold Layne and See Emily Play.

I find it best to pop open the lyric book or if you don't have it, look on this website and read along to the music. The whole album kind of is an experience in itself and I find it hard to pick out particular songs that I like the best.
