Yet another school year decends upon La Casa Del Fulghum. My daughter brought home a rather unique ( and pretty cool I thought) assignment her first week back in the hallowed halls.

She was to put together a CD with 10 songs describing her personality. In the process of helping her out she asked me to do one for me... I said OK.. that'd be cool.. so here's mine.. with a brief explanation as to why each song is there.. It's actually rather revealing..

1) I Love the Night: Blue Oyster Cult.

I do like the night, guess I'm a night person. as the song itself says "The day is OK, and the sun can be fun, but I live to see those rays slip away."

2) Wild West End: Dire Straits.

I have spent a good deal of my life as an itnerrant musician in the "art districts" of wherever I was living.. North Rush St. in Chicago, Beal Street in Memphis.....this song always hit home with me.

3) I'm Tore Down: Eric Clapton.

OK.. mentally I'm a trainwreck.. I've been in and out of therapy for years..

4) Comfortably Numb: Pink Floyd.

I know all to well the feeling Rog and Dave are describing.. Anybody else on antidepressants???

5) Coming Back to Life: Pink Floyd.

I have fought my way back to "normalcy" more than once...from depression/anxiety disorder. it's not a fun trip

6) Silent Lucidity: Queensryche.

Part and parcel with the last 3 songs.. I can identify all too closely.

7) Headwires: The Foo Fighters.

Just another mental case song.....

8) La Villa Strangiato: Rush.

The title says it all.. I have lead a very strange life.

9) Won't Get Fooled Again: The Who.

I (as many of us) have had people and situations get the better of me. This song to me is a song of hope, strength and redemption.

10) Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers: ZZ Top.

After all is said and done, I'm still just that.. 44 going on 21...

I'm prolly not the best dancer in the world or anything of the sort, but I do like dancing and the first time I heard this song, I couldn't stop dancing and it's just a wicked song

Twentysomething: Jamie Cullum

A wicked song about the stage of life that I'm right now, and it's a jazz song, doesn't get any better than that

Java Jive: Manhattan Transfer

"I love coffee, I love tea, I love the Java Jive and it loves me" need I say more?

Although all my friends are not **** ups as the song states, it still describes really well the relationships I have with my friends

Stormy Monday-Allman Brothers Band- yeah-that’s me!

I talk to the wind- King Crimson- Sometimes I do, or feel that I might as well (particularly where my kids are concerned)

Fat Old Sun-Pink Floyd-this has nothing to do with my increasing waistline (I’ve started back to the gym!) I’m nice and peaceful most of the time

My pink half of the drainpipe-Bonzo dog doo dah band- always was a square peg in a round hole, and always wanted to be different anyway…

The title of the song completely sums up my own personal philosophy: mental endurance at all costs, as well as belief in the triumph of tenacity. I can take whatever you can throw at me!

2. Radiohead - Cuttooth
"Run until your lungs are sore, until you find an open door. I build you up to pull you down, tie you to the stake and watch you drown. A little bit of knowledge will destroy you. I'll find another skin to wear."
With the last song as my mantra, I go on battling through life, sometimes at the expense of those whom I love. But you have to just continue running, don't look back. They can't hit a moving target, so keep changing your outlook.

3. Gary Numan - We Are Glass
"We are cold, we're not supposed to cry. But it's all just a thought, so here am I."
Some vague stuff here about my identity (it's fragile, like glass, get it?) and how I relate to whatever pocket of society I happen to be dealing with. Particularly matters of love and sex. Musing on what other people think and do... and incredulity at what we're capable of (good and bad).

4. The Police - Invisible Sun
"I don't want to spend my time in hell, looking at the walls of a prison cell. I don't ever want to play the part of a statistic on a government chart."
Not just for the literal meaning, because half of my family is from Northern Ireland and this song was written directly about the situation there, but also about refusing to be crushed under the boot of tyranny. About rising above oppression and giving a big fat middle finger to figures of authourity when they deserve it.

5. Paul Simon - Flowers Never Bend With the Rainfall
"It’s no matter if you’re born to play the king or pawn, for the line is thinly drawn ’tween joy and sorrow. And so my fantasy becomes reality, and I must be what I must be and face tomorrow."
If you start out life with relative middle-class comfort, that immediately screws up your perception of what's real and what's fake. You can easily slip into complacency and end up lower than you ever thought you could go. That's something you've just got to deal with. Take life at face value.

6. Barenaked Ladies - Break Your Heart
"I couldn't tell you I was happy you were gone. So I lied and said that I missed you when we were apart. I couldn't tell you, so I had to lead you on. But I didn't mean to break your heart."
The whole song very accurately and precisely describes what I felt about my first really serious relationship with a woman. God, did that ever hurt. Anyone who thinks these guys are just a joke band should go through a breakup and then listen to this song, it's a doozy.

7. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
"Look out kid, it's somethin' you did. God knows when, but you're doin' it again. You better duck down the alley way, lookin' for a new friend. The man in the coon-skin cap in the pig-pen wants eleven dollar bills... you only got ten."
What the hell is wrong with these people? How do they expect me to please them? They want this, they want the exact opposite... sometimes the most frustrating thing for me is just figuring out other people.

8. George Harrison - Not Guilty
"I am not trying to be smart, I only want what I can get. I'm really sorry for your aging head, but like you heard me said, not guilty."
Don't pin that sick shit on me. I'm not your scapegoat. It's probably more your fault than mine. But I'm a very contrary, contradictory person too. So it might just be nobody's fault but mine.

9. Led Zeppelin - Nobody's Fault But Mine
"Gotta monkey on my back, gotta m-m-m-m-monkey on my back back back back... gonna change my ways tonight, it's nobody's fault but mine."
I'm my own toughest critic and my own harshest observer. I can be such a stupid prick, or so says my guilt-ridden conscience. Self-absorbed, lazy and mean... or so I think even when people tell me otherwise.

10. Roger Waters - Every Stranger's Eyes
"In award-winning photographs of life-rafts in the China seas, in transit camps, under arc lamps, on unloading ramps, in faces blurred by rubber stamps, I recognize... myself, in every stranger's eyes."
Some hopeful camaraderie in the comforting glow of other human beings. Faith in our ability to pull through, and that spark of life that unites us all.

I think that's enough soul-bearing for one evening.
