| Re: Spyware Do what simon says, Fixxy, I've repaired 8000 computers in the last 6 years and i recommend the pay for ver. of pest patrol and adaware 6.0 free ver. also AVG free. The anti-spyware business however is always changing, so always be on the lookout for something that works better. Your bandwidth is being sucked down by a virus, browser hijackings, and spyware. Keep in mind if you are using a P2P such as KaZaa ( I HATE that F'in thing). It deposits up to 9 pieces of adware and spyware, eZulu is one of them and seems to suck the most bandwidth, however sometimes removal seems to damage the registry badly and, I recommend backing up your data and format the HDD and do a clean install. When U save is another culprit and like a data miner has to send info back to it's home site, I've seen some computers so full of that junk that you can't even bring google up cause it sucks down all available bandwidth. If anyone knows anybody who programs that crap, shoot um. (just kidding) Don't forget, Update immediately after installing your programs. Last edited by waters : 09-07-2004 at 04:51 PM. |

| Re: Spyware Keep in mind folks, that Adaware and pestpatrol are two different animals. PestPatrol is for spyware, and removes some adware. AdAware is just for adware, and does not remove the nasty spyware. You must use all 3, along with ALL the critical updates (plug your holes). Hope this helps, later dude. |

| Re: Spyware I do appear to have a critical hole that needs plugged (I mean, obviously, Doktor Cheese has already thought up a witty retort to that statement) but wasn't the XP service pack meant to take care of that? Anyways, I used to use adaware but kinda forgot about it a few months ago, then uninstalled it between now and then. Thanks for the reminder. Have reinstalled the thing and it has been entirely efficient. I also grabbed Pestpatrol and it did half the work (finding and identifying) but alas, unless I pay up, it will do no more. I am in no way tight-fisted (again, I smell a retort from Cheese in the air) but would prefer something all encompassing and free. Adaware is good, but as rightly pointed out, it doesn't deal with everything. Any other suggestions?

| Re: Spyware The pay for ver. of PestPatrol has the updates and can deal with upcoming threats, the free stuff simply can't do the job, you can't keep it current, unless you download it once a week or so. I finally bit the bullet and paid for it, even so, it won't catch everything due to the fact that the threats are ever changing and definition updates are the only way to stay current, and they know that, thus the free and pay version. The crack dealers do the same thing, it's just a different comodity. If you're wise in the ways of windows registry, you can identify the pests with PP free ver. then manually remove (with the help of their web site) the offenders yourself. XP sp2 has all the updates (patches and security plugs) rolled into one package, plus some other good stuff, this sp is a good one and is a must have. The sp2 offers a decent firewall, it allows you to control access like Black Ice does, and that's the rub, shut um out b4 they get a chance to do any damage. Updating weekly is the norm anymore, and one almost must have 1) firewall. 2)Anti-virus. 3) Anti-spyware. 4) Anti- adware. 5) Windows critical updates, constant changing threats. I also must say, don't spend a lot of time on removing deep or numerous pests, back up your data and do what my father-in-law taught me, B.T.D. (bare the drive) format re-install windeers. |

| Re: Spyware Get this gang. MS was toying with the idea of charging a small fee for XP SP2, but I think they realized their swiss cheese of an OS might get them strung up to the nearest tree, keep in mind, MS does a good job of balancing flexibilty with functionality, without those holes, functionality takes a big hit. You take the good with the bad. I found keeping XP up to date is superior to any OS overall. Linux has real mode driver problems I hate to deal with, and the stability thing is way over rated, Firefox trades one set of problems for another, so all in all, XP(with SP2) is welcome in my house now, I used to hate it, b4 sp2! I still have 98se at home (most stabile and versatile os ever!), it will now, sept., be replaced by XP. |

Sorry but that's absolute bollocks, XP Pro pisses all over it even in it's original condition without the service packs. |

| Re: Spyware I forgot to tell all of you, get the sp2 disk mailed to you, it can be ordered from their web site. This allows you to reload it conveniently if you have to reinstall windows. If you down load from the net, you'll still have to do it again, large download is no fun! With the disk already there it's quicker and easier. |

| Re: Spyware Depends on what you're doing, Cheese, if it's mostly business related software, then you're correct. If we're talking 3d game rendering 98 whips it's ass plus Xp h.e. even whips pro's ass in that arena, NT sucks for games. But with some of the new direct X 9 components, programers will switch to make XP the gaming platform of choice. I still use dos, and some real mode drivers won't function correctly in Pro's emulated dos, plus the gaming thing, plus I can reinstall 98se 3 times as fast as Pro, and not have a 1 hr load for freakin sp2. Blanket statements are a thing of the past, with these animals. |

| Re: Spyware XP pro has some great tools in it, and I was going to get it for that reason, but it's just MS hype. I can supplement those with other tools and frankly I'm not as impressed with Pro as I was at first (costs too much), I'll go with h.e. |
