Re: Terminal Frost

Learning to Fly is about ...ahem...learning to fly. Sorry but Dave has said as much. He said that while writing the song he was taking flying lessons. The video is cool, but I don't think Dave had anything to do with it. It was all Storm. Sorry.

Re: Terminal Frost

In On The Turning Away I thought I heard someone mumble the word "Monty Python". I love the hilarious stupidity of those films, I can sit around watching 'em for many hours! I saw the one with "Blamange Playing Tennis" and "Dead Parrot" last night... Oh whatever you probably don't care.

I think all the messages in PF are so cool, like the "If you give the monkey a quick, short shock", "Aye? Is that Charlie? Hello Charlie!... Great.", "There is no dark side of the moon really; matter of fact it's all dark", "This Roman Meal bakery thought you'd like to know", (I hope I got them all right) they really add to the overall effect of the music! They help carry across the meaning to the lyrics, and can be even more effective than the words themselves if you've heard/seen/whatever the original source of the sentence.

Re: Terminal Frost

Aggh, it's so hard to hear the sentences though, you have to listen so carefully! I just looked it up, and the Us and Them sentence is not about shocking monkeys, actually it's

I mean, they're not gunna kill ya, so if you give 'em a quick short,
sharp, shock, they won't do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off
lightly, 'cos I would've given him a thrashing - I only hit him once!
It was only a difference of opinion, but really...I mean good manners
don't cost nothing do they, eh?

Oh well, I was close enough .

Re: Terminal Frost

Is it just me, or does AMLOR fail miserably in combining the sound effects with the music, at times it seems as if they are trying to imitate Dark Side.

Re: Terminal Frost

I didn't see any particular mismatch...in fact, I thought there were some VERY clever things they did (I say more on this earlier in the thread). Dark Side? No resemblance, I don't think.

Re: Terminal Frost

Probably because it's the first album after Mr. Waters' departure, and has only one Floydian actively writing on it (Mr. Gilmour)...but I like it. Some people object to it on the grounds that it is after Mr. Waters, others call it a DG solo album and don't like it...others don't like the slightly 80's-ish sound to it...

But I must be in the minority, because I can't find a reason to dislike it!

Re: Terminal Frost

I don't hate it, I just don't like it as much as other Floyd albums, and even many other non-Floyd albums. Only half of it is listenable, and half of that is actually really good.

Re: Terminal Frost

It's not my most listened to album but it is good. Its a refreshing break from Rog's heavy style (good but not one to listen to frequently for me). I'd say its a good try on Gilmour's part to try to create a good sound, and to that end he succeeded.

Re: Terminal Frost

AMLOR:

I was very excited to get it when it came out. The first time I listened to it, I was...confused. It was Floyd (for the obvious DG reasons), and yet - it's wasn't Floyd (for the obvious DG reasons). But after 15 years, it has settled in to a good Floyd album for me. Not my favorite, but a good one.

Signs of Life: DG getting warmed up.

Learning to Fly: A good tune, better live.

The Dogs of War: Junk. It deserves it's award as worst Floyd song ever.

One Slip: An example of a great tune, but probably more appropriate on a DG solo album.

On The Turning Away: Classic Floyd in the Irish sense.

Yet Another Movie: My fav on the album. DG's successful attempt (imho) at a darker, heavier song. I absolutely love his solo in the middle.

A New Machine (1&2): Good bookends for Terminal Frost - nothing more, nothing less

Terminal Frost: Great sax, decent guitar, short on style (compared to Marooned, for instance)

Sorrow: This one continues to grow on me - even after 15 years.

The best thing about AMLOR is that it got David, Nick, and Rick (and a killer band) back on the road. I saw the tour at Foxboro stadium (Boston) in 1988, and it was such an experience. The bed attacking the stage from outside the stadium, the quadrophonic sound system (made ABitW,Pt 2 bearable), and Gilmour's best guitar solo on CN. I was in heaven.

As usual, just my 2 cents worth.

And as usual Terminal Frost...We agree entirely. I only wish I'd seen that concert.

What do you mean by "in the Irish sense"? Is this an euphemism for something or do you literally mean Irish?

Re: Terminal Frost

I just meant...that if you close your eyes, turn it up really loud, and have a pint of Guinness in your hand, Dave's beautiful voice has an Irish sort of lilt to it. It reminds me of several local Irish bands in upstate New York...where I spend many an evening closing my eyes, listening to the loud music with a Guinness in my hand...
