From a technical standpoint, I've read it many times that the '73 tour was the bands peak. It certainly wasn't for Plant, he had nowhere near the range & power of his '69-'71 era (but was great nonetheless).
Best Performances :
1-San Francisco 4-27-69 Simply one of the greatest performances by anyone ever. Most of the show is available in sbd, the audience source fills in the gaps. Definitive bootleg versions: "The Jimmy Page Experience" and "Collage".
2-Osaka 9-29-71 A special night, universally acclaimed as having one of their best renditions of "D & C" ever. Anyone that has the boot knows that's the truth. The acoustic set is exceptional, as is the onstage banter, which is unique, entertaining & surprisingly audible. Any shows from Japan '71 tour = as good as gold, but it starts with this one. Definitive boot version "You Were There In Spirits".
3-Los Angeles 6-21-77 Hailed as the best show of their latter years. One of my favorite live solos ever belongs to John Paul Jones: his piano solo in "No Quarter" from this very show. He was great most nights in '77 but this one in particular is the stuff that legends are made of. This has to be their most popular & most traded bootleg, stunning sound quality for an audience tape. Definitive boot version : this show gets re-released nearly every year in Japan, but all you need to know is "Listen To This Eddie".
