Some say Jimmy was sloppy from '77-'80 (maybe true) but this particular live rendition spits on those claims. I'm not going to get into my favorite live "Stairway" or "D & C" solos, I don't have all day......& last I checked, this was a PF site.
I'd very much like to hear what you think are the best live Zeppelin performances. The '73 New York Dazed & Confused and Stairways on The Song Remains The Same are pretty amazing I think and I've never heard better, though I haven't heard that many Zeppelin shows.

As for Pink Floyd I think the '71 Meddler/Front Row Centre/Meddled (whatever you want to call it) bootleg has the best Echoes solos, and same for Fat Old Sun. Please correct me if you think I'm wrong though... I'd love to hear better.
The sad thing about Floyd is the lack of soundboards ...

Oh well I'll just leep listening to bands that seems to appreciate the enthusiasm of their fans. Grateful Dead here I come again!

From a technical standpoint, I've read it many times that the '73 tour was the bands peak. It certainly wasn't for Plant, he had nowhere near the range & power of his '69-'71 era (but was great nonetheless).

Best Performances :

1-San Francisco 4-27-69 Simply one of the greatest performances by anyone ever. Most of the show is available in sbd, the audience source fills in the gaps. Definitive bootleg versions: "The Jimmy Page Experience" and "Collage".
2-Osaka 9-29-71 A special night, universally acclaimed as having one of their best renditions of "D & C" ever. Anyone that has the boot knows that's the truth. The acoustic set is exceptional, as is the onstage banter, which is unique, entertaining & surprisingly audible. Any shows from Japan '71 tour = as good as gold, but it starts with this one. Definitive boot version "You Were There In Spirits".
3-Los Angeles 6-21-77 Hailed as the best show of their latter years. One of my favorite live solos ever belongs to John Paul Jones: his piano solo in "No Quarter" from this very show. He was great most nights in '77 but this one in particular is the stuff that legends are made of. This has to be their most popular & most traded bootleg, stunning sound quality for an audience tape. Definitive boot version : this show gets re-released nearly every year in Japan, but all you need to know is "Listen To This Eddie".

Pete Townshend-"My generation"-Live at leeds. Pete is not in the same category as a page or clapton or even gilmour, i admit, but listening to his solo's on Live at Leeds, he was an outstanding guitar player.

A very good song -- and an even better guitar solo.

A really good guitar solo is from Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall live. On "Another Brick pt.2", you get the regular solo, but then David (I think it's David) breaks out into this wild Zappa-like guitar solo -- truly amazing.

I like Dave's solo on the BBC sessions Echoes performance....it's grown on me slowly...I thought it was too aggressive at first.
