that ethereal More

Just bought More, and the one thing that stands out is that incredibly emotive instrument that plays on Green is the colour, and a few other tracks. Call me musically illiterate, but what is that, a flute, a Mellotron or some sort of other wind instrument? It just takes the whole album to another level. Anyone know who plays whatever it is?
Too bad they didnt use it more often in the heyday years.

I believe it's a flute. It's a nice addition, I agree.

Didn't Nick cheat on Ummagumma by having his wife play flute? Same era, so maybe it's her.

More is the most underrated Floyd album. I used to think OBC was, but in the last couple of years, most everyone has come to sing its praises.

Give More a listen, ye neoFloydoids who are probing the Floyd catalog. You just may love it.

More is the only floyd album I'm missing...I never thought it to be under rated, just 'different' then the others, dunno why. for years I thought it was a compilation and never checked up on it.

I'll have to get it now

Most of the album is very solid, and it has a theme -- the soundtrack to the movie. The tracks are simply amazing, but I'm still trying to understand that damn Quicksilver.

It's a good album, but I still think "Atom Heart Mother" is the poor, underrated Floyd album when it comes down to it.

But "Green Is The Colour" and "Cymbline" are great, to name a few.

What you're hearing is an Ibizan flute (which makes sense given the film is set in Ibiza). It's also heard on "The Party Sequence." Not sure who's playing it though, could be an uncredited session musician.

But yes, MORE is definitely underrated. Too bad the film is so crappy.

Haha. Yeah i read the plot on the CD sleeve. It was quite bizarre. 'And then...he dies!'
But as an album i really like it, i still think OBC was a better soundtrack, and AHM is the best early era album, but More has a certain folky charm. Was this the one they recorded in four days or something, half drunk?

More was great, but it always sounded too sloppily recorded/mixed to me. Mainly on songs like Green Is the Colour and Cymbaline... I personally feel they should find the masters and redo it. Maybe bring up some guitar solos in the mix or some crap like that.

ok, shutting up about remasters.

I agree. One of my favorites from this album, The Nile Song, has some sizzling psycedelic guitar licks unfortunately buried deep behind an overpowering bass / rhythm guitar / vocal wall of sound. Ibiza Bar, basically the same song, seems to have a little more balance.
