What Live at Pompeii could have been...

I've been thinking about what Pink Floyd might've played had they not been delayed by the electrical problems, and I'm quite saddened at what we could've gotten, and what we did get. Even if they just played some other songs instead of a few of the ones they did. I mean, half of the songs that are played are just not that great. Wouldn't you much rather have The Embryo than Set the Controls? Or the awesome live version of Fat Old Sun rather than Saucerful (ok, granted we wouldn't have gotten the gong scene, but the better song would have dignified the loss). And Madame Knobs is dissapointing when compared to Seamus; maybe Cymbaline in it's place?

Now, I'm not complaining (ok, maybe a bit), because I absolutely love Pompeii as it is; there's nothing greater. But it would've been awesome to see the Floyd play some of their better live songs. Anyone agree with me?

I'll forgive you for this because you like the Pixies.
Pompeii is freaking great. Don't try to change it.

they couldn't get enough power from the Pompeii site, so they had to lay cables from the city, which is far. That delayed them quite a bit and they lost several shooting days...

Watch the interview with the director Adrian Maben on the dvd.

Pompeii is great, awesome. Anyone who wants to change it is crazy.

I think Pompeii stand as an enduring testament of a band on the cusp of 'playing different tunes'

All of the cost, delays, trouble, etc. associated with Pompeii is worth it just to have the incredible version of 'Echoes'.

I totally disagree... the performances at Pompeii are well-nigh perfect. If you'd like to see some excellent Pompeii-like studio footage of the Floyd performing "Cymbaline," check out the KQED TV special An Hour with Pink Floyd. It also features a pretty spectacular performance of "Atom Heart Mother," and the only known video of Dave and Roger performing "Grantchester Meadows" together on acoustic guitars.

Even though I'd like to see Saucerful of Secrets cut out (along with all the CGI bollocks), you have to remember that they chose to put on the songs that fit in with the Pompeii ruinous atmosphere. Saucerful of Secrets does fit in, even if i'd prefer Atom Heart Mother it's the better choice. And I'd love a Fat Old Sun with a really long solo at the end... but again that would be totally out of place.

That's not to say the dvd can't be improved on.
IMHO what they should have done though is have the interviews done amidst the ruins, rather in those boring old studio rooms. That would make for a much more flowing DVD, because with the way it is it seems that even though they've gone to such a great place for a Floyd concert they have hardly made any use of it.

How dare someone want to cut out SfoS from the Pompeii line-up. That version of Celestial Voices is perhaps one of the greatest harmonical pieces of music. Replacing that with...Fat Old Sun? What the hell is wrong with you?

Granted, I am not a fan of SFOS, but the Pompeii version is the best rendition I have ever heard and is well worth the effort to listen to it.

The version of 'Echoes' on there is the archetypical one as far as I'm concerned.
