I heard that a reporter actually asked one of the band members that question, showing how idiotic the reporter was and they thought the record executives thought the same thing, like they didnt even know theyre names, and that the band members have faceless images, like the faceless business man on the wish you were here album booklet

The whole song is basically about showbiz and the record company trying to trick the band into how they are going to make so much money (but really alot of the money just goes the the record company).

The "which one's pink" bit is supposed to be about how the record executive guy is trying to tell the band how he loves there music (so he can sign them and make money off of them), but really he doesn't know anything about them, because he thinks "Pink" is a member of the band. This is a question commonly asked by people who don't know much about the band.

As lej already said - "everbody else is just green" is about how everyone is jealous because the band is a big hit.

The "riding the gravy train" bit is about the record company getting the the bands money, even though the band is doing the work.

Beautifully put Darkside......and isn't the middle part "Have you seen the charts? It's a hell of a start it could be made into a monster".....etc. about how the record company is now happy there getting money but they aren't satisfied and they want them to keep putting albums out and stuff like that?

that is so true. i used to have a black t-shirt that had in pink on the front just Pink Floyd and the back in big pink words said "oh by the way which ones pink"
i tried to find it this past weekend but i couldn't. i wanted my wife to wear it this past Saturday. i bought it back in 1990 or so.

The "it could be made into a monster" part makes sense if put into context:

"Everybody else is just green...have you seen the chart? It's one hell of a start, it could be made into a monster if we all pull together as a team!"


Translation:

Everyone else is jealous...have you see the album's sales on the chart? That's a damn good start, we can make it even better, if we all work together.

Refering to DSOTM doing well on the charts, record exec pushing the band to do even better on the next album.

Well, it appears that everything I could say about the song has already been said. Good job everybody. I will say, though, that the lyrical irony in the song makes it one of my favourites to listen to. The turn of phrase is brilliant.
