If Syd Had not left?

Do you think if syd barrett had not went crazy and had stayed in pink floyd they would be better than what they were after he left. and do u think they would remain to be a Psychdelic Rock group?

I think they would be as good if not maybe better than what they were without him. Sure there would be no DSOTM or WYWH. But there would albums that would simply replace those two with the same calibur of quality. Boy would it be. wonder how it would be like. Ya and as for if they would change their style i dont know. pink floyd without syd did, from psychedelic to progressive alt. Your ideas?

Well if Syd was still with PF....that probably means no David Gilmour joining the group. I honestly don't know what their music would've been like if he had stayed. I don't think they would've stayed with the psychodelic rock though and who knows if they would've gotten big with Syd still in the band. Because we all know DSOTM made The Pink Floyd huge!

I personally don't think they would have been better and probably wouldn't have been as good.

I love Piper, but it's not a good enough sample for me to declare Syd a genius and say he could have equaled DSOTM, Animals, WYWH, and The Wall let alone surpass these albums.

I tend to trust Roger's judgment when he said Syd couldn't have remained as a writer because his ideas were no longer any good.

Yeah probably let's face it the lyrics on Piper might be funny at times, but there not really good.

They would have likely gigged around for a couple more years until the Psycedelic fad ran its course, then disbanded to become another trivia game question, like most other bands.

Totally agreed. And I agree with the other statements; there would have been no David Gilmour in Pink Floyd, no DSOTM, no WYWH, and probably no lots of things we love about Floyd. Roger Waters would not have been moved to write so much about madness...therefore we wouldn't have even had 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' (Rog has said they did that instrumental about insanity). AND CAN YOU IMAGINE Syd on "Animals"?! It wouldn't have been a vicious, honest social statement it would have been...something else. There would be no "Wall" (many parts were inspired by Syd), etc.
I imagine if Syd had stayed and they broke up just a few years later, as suggested by Stratman, Roger Waters would have had a solo career with at least "Animals" because he was just aching to unleash that one, what with his observational nature, and some of the cynical songs about the record business and greed ('Money,' 'Have a Cigar,' etc).

But, you didn't clarify whether or not Syd would or would not still be on drugs.

But we would have spared The Division Bell too, which would have been nice.

Actually the only reference to Syd's departure/hermitism I've seen confirmed in TDB by a bandmember was a verse in "Poles Apart." Some speculate that some of the words in "High Hopes" refer to Syd which could be, but I haven't seen it confirmed.

he means that the band wouldnt have even existed to record the division bell, as they would have probably separated sometime in the 70's

Sure, but would I still think that way today if I had had a beef burrito last night instead of turkey a la king? What if I had eaten both? Would I still have been able to get massively blotto and party my ass off? Would I have vomited early and gone to bed before 12?

It's a difficult question.

That's probably what would have happened. That's a lot of food there.
