About some guy (Pink) being Comfortably Numb, which was a result of his mental isolation (the Wall), and a bit of drugs probably helped a little. At least that's what I gather, but I'm not exactly the greatest musical interpreter of all time.

Re: Whats "Comfortably Numb" about?

Hmmm...a tricky question perhaps.

Really, the original lyrics should give you all the information you need.

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on, now,
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move,
But I can't hear what you're saying.

When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.
...

Perhaps it's about an artist's realisation that with all the fame and fortune that comes with Rock stardom, he/she must also accept grave losses (relationships, privacy, intimacy with the audience, artistic freedom, etc.) along the way.

Whether able to accept these losses or not, the feeling that remains is one of numbness. A comfortable (lots of lovely money to chase away the blues - groupies, drugs) numbness.

That's my take on it anyway, but what do I know?

Byron

Re: Whats "Comfortably Numb" about?

To me, this song is about Heroin or a drug trip. The weightlessness of two balloons is alluding to the high. Things are only coming through in waves becaues he is in another world.. in his own little bubble. When you are on drugs, you are comfortable, and also numb to the world around you. The ship floating on the horizon is showing that other things are happening out there in reality, but Pink is so far from reality that it is just the horizon to him.

Re: Whats "Comfortably Numb" about?

To me it's all about the performer (pink) being forced to take drugs in order to perform onstage by his Manager and stuff. Read an interview on this topic in this site itself. It's where a RJ and Waters discuss The Wall as they play it in radio 1.

He's had a breakdown. He's far removed from reality. In a warm place. At a Boomtown Rats gig.

Re: Whats "Comfortably Numb" about?

I distinctly remember having read an interview with Roger where he says that the whole song was inspired by his experience after having been given tranqs by a doctor before the Montreal '77 show. Apparently he wasn't feeling too well that night. I don't however, distinctly remember where I read this.

Re: Whats "Comfortably Numb" about?

It's about ole' Rog being sick and having to get shot up with tranqs so he could perform.
Heard it strait from the horses mouth.(The horse being Roger of course.)
Not about heroin dumbass. They havent written a song about drugs since 'Let's Roll Another One' in 1966.

It's about how some people can go through so much pain they become confortably numb.

I'm not 100% sure about the meaning of the song, all I know is it scared the s**t out of me when I was little.

Re: Whats "Comfortably Numb" about?

I don't know if I remember correctly, but I thought I'd heard Mr. Waters was hospitalised for some illness and he had to be given morphine for the pain. Is this and the other accounts one and the same?
