| Hello all, So I'm trying to figure out what my next purchase should be, and I need to enlist your collective wisdom in deciding. You see, I've played for about a year and consider myself to be a good rhythm player and a decent lead player (I won't melt your face but Im working on it). My cousin has asked me to play with a group were putting together for a big halloween party in a couple weeks. It's gonna be guys I've grown up with and jammed with before, but due to the lack of time it'll probably just be the easier stuff we all like (Tom Petty, U2, Oasis, etc.). I'm good to go guitar-wise (Highway 1), but am lacking in the gig amp department (Fender Frontman 25R). I've always wanted to go tubes, but as a college student, I lack the funds necessary for a Vibrolux, Twin Reverb, AC30, or any of the amps I really lust for. But what about a Fender Hot Rod or Deville? I could make one of those happen, and yes, we have a PA. Do they have a good tube sound, with enough power for a gig? I need to go down and try one out, but I also wanted input from more experienced people. On another front, I'm also needing to get into this world of effects. I think I'll get the Big Muff for distortion, but Im cautious as to what delay to get. What kind of delay is it that Gilmour used in the second part of Echoes, the 4 note deal on the E and A strings? I definately want that one. Any input received on any of these issues is greatly appreciated.

| Re: amp/gear/tone Q's You gotta be careful with the muff. I hear its very noisy. And if you listen to samples, it sounds very noisy. I bet when gilmour uses it, he has got something to control the noise with. Well due to this fact im rather buying the tubescreamer than the muff. |

| Re: amp/gear/tone Q's My Big Muff isn't too noisy - but it *is* a tone-sucking monster. I'm going to get an American one soon, I stopped using the Russian because my clean tone starting lacking. A Fender Hot Rod Deville 2X12" amplifier pushes 60 watts (in tube power). My Super Reverb is but 40 watts (total tube) and it matches (and sometimes overpowers) my brother's Stage 100 setup, which is (obviously) 100 watts solid-state. So if you got a Hot Rod Deville you'd be set for a while, I gamble. They're nice amps, too, I'd just recommend getting an outboard distortion pedal... the distortion built-in isn't too good (in my opinion). Then again, you're planning to get a Big Muff so that's taken care of. If you don't end up liking the Big Muff, I would recommend a Boss DS-1. They're cheap, reliable and can get a wide range of distortion tones (and sounds great through a tube amp). Damn, I talk too much, hehe. |

| Re: amp/gear/tone Q's Umm, Ablaze, the big muff and the tubescreamer are different types of pedals. Muff = Fuzz TS = Overdrive Very different distrotions. My Fender FM212 is awesome, and ridiculously cheap at around $300US. 100w Solidstate 2x12, its too loud for me and can literally be heard down the street in between 1 and 2 on the volume control. Very good purchase.

The Hot Rod DeVille is an excellent choice, I've been looking at picking one up myself. Shane is right about the onboard distortion though. Quote:
If you go Muff definately get an American mfg, the quality controll is much better, more dependable, and as stated they don't kill your clean tone as badly. If $$ is an issue and you're looking for maximum versatility, take a peek at the Digitech RP200a. It's a digital multi effects pedal, I've been using one for over a year now and really love it. It has 13 effects built in, you can run up to 11 simultaneously, and program each one independantly. It's runs about $150.00 U.S. If I recall correctly the delay that Dave uses was custom made for him by somebody...but I can't recall the details.... Anybody else remember??

Pete Cornish has made some effects for Dave through the years. www.gilmourish.com has great info about Dave's playing and tone, if you want to check out more of what equipment he uses. EDIT: And Gilmourish says that Dave used Binson Echorec at 310ms for delay on Meddle...
