| Re: Weblogs: Cool, or pieces of Shit? I mainly use mine to complain about college, since I know my friends are sick of hearing about it in person. Besides, changing the backgrounds and whatnot is good simple graphics practice. and I have 4 of them, though I really only use one

That's why I got one...lol. And btw, NNJ, I do have a diary that nobody reads. It's probably more lurid than a 99 cent novel, and it's private.

| Re: Weblogs: Cool, or pieces of Shit? I like the communities that are apart of some blog sites like livejournal but other than that I don't care for them. I started one because sometimes writing is a really good way for me to vent, but for the most part I don't have anything to say so I just deleted it. Besides, I prefer to write in a private journal when I need to vent. I find blogs to be pretty dull. I've known people who need to type every detail about their whole day. To me that is just silly. Opinion blogs tend to be pretensious. I've even see friendships end or come close to an end because of things that are said in them. Some people also post too much info! |

I'd read it more often, but you go on and on about alien abductions, conspiracies, and the economic outlook... Too much like real life.

While this thread's a bit dated, blogs are of interest again; there is no doubt that they've had some significant impact on recent events. Last week, Harvard conducted a seminar on blogs, and there have been some very interesting comments coming from there. The blogs I'm talking about are not simply online diaries. Blogs are becoming significant in the world of news and communication, and some people have eschewed the conventional media in favor of reading blogs for their news. This is history happening before our eyes, but like most developments surrounding the net, most of us aren't going to notice until it's already happened. The advantage of blogs over print or television is this: the comments section. Anybody is free to call 'bullshit!'; there's no difference between the reporter and the reader. Another advantage blogs have is links - a 'see for yourself' feature that the networks or print people would never countenance. This has the net effect of making the news a two-way street, where not only to I get to yell at the TV set, but it also has to listen to me. Blogs, of course, run the gamut. Anyone is free to write whatever they choose, on any subject they choose. I read a number of them, on a number of subjects ranging from politics and current events to one by an engineer who is soliciting ideas from the engineering community at large for a project he's working on. I won't recommend any unless asked, as I'd much rather hear about what other people are reading. But it's obvious that we're in a position to observe history in the making.
