Acid rock is pretty much America's version of Psychedelic Rock when it came out from the "underground" and became mainstream. In other words, it's a poseur.

You can't make a comment like that without backing it up. I'm open to opinions. What's your idea of it? If it includes trying to convince me that The Strawberry Alarm Clock were innovative, please let me escort you to the door.

It was the 'poseur' part...

I grew up with it; I'd consider early Jefferson Airplane, some Grateful Dead (no shortage of acid there), etc. to be acid rock, and I would also consider them to be original. They weren't trying to copy Sgt. Pepper era Beatles, which is where I imagined you were coming from.

The Airplane were hardly acid rock aside from White Rabbit, which everyone associates them with. Their first album I thought was more folk influenced than anything. I really can't stomach The Dead, but I give them their rightful props. And as much as I love The Beatles I would NEVER classify them as acid OR psychedlic rock.

The Doors are blues-based, IMO.

Just because you drop a couple of hits of acid and read Siddhartha, it doesn't make you psychadelic afficionados. I have a clip of Paul McCartney from the 60s discussing the whole Psych movement, and he pretty much makes an ass of himself.

Not surprising; Sir Paul is an ass.

So, then, what bands would you list under PR and which under AR? Does it have to be from Europe to be psychedelic, US for acid?

And where does Canada fit in? I liked the Guess Who, for instance.

My circle considered the Doors to be acid rock...
