| starting down the road of effects, need input As you may have surmised from the title, I'm taking the tentative steps into the world of effects. The first thing I buy will either be delay or distortion. Let me say that while Gilmour's tone is my favorite, I have many other guitarists whose tone I admire (Clapton, Hendrix, Santana, the guy from ZZ Top, SRV, Tom Petty, etc.), and Im not trying to be a Gilmour clone. That said, for distortion, I'm leaning towards a Fuzz Face and maybe a DS-1. I've heard too many people go out and buy the Muff only to think it's just too wild, or sounds like crap without some sort of limiter. Yay? Nay? For Delay, what's good? I've had my eye on the DD-6. The special thing I want out of delay is the type heard on the second part of Echoes, leading up to the verse. Now is that some kind of delay, or is it echo? If it's echo, what's a good echo? I've seen Danelectro has a couple different kinds out. I know I like the Univibe sound, and I'll get a wah too. Also, what's a good compressor? Any input is greatly appreciated.

| Re: starting down the road of effects, need input well i would suggest gettin the distortion/fuzz first. I fyou want the distorted sounds of Hendrix, Gilmour, Clapton, Santana, and zz top the fuzz face is the one for you. as for SRV distortion sound, im sure you can get somethin out of the olf fuzz face. as for delay. get the boss dd6. i have one and i dont regret it. people say analog this analog that. sure with analog you can get a much more specific, and somehow warm sound. but the digital delay 6 is a great substitute for any other delay. if ur not planning on have an entire album based on the delay, just for using here and there and enhanching sound the DD6 is the right choice. as for the univibe and wah, great choices. trust me the univibe is a great substitute for tremolo, phaser, chorus, and flanger. univibe is better than all those. so yes univibe is a good choice although expensive. and as for wah. wah can not be substituted by univibe. so yes get a wah. Dunlop and Vox wah's are best. I have a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Wah. i myself love it. although i am startin to like the vox wah more. anyway the hendrix wah has a fat sound, very fuzzy and not tooooooooo trebly but trebly enough. if u want a more 60's and early 70's wah dunlop hendrix wah is great. u know really depends on your taste. but i would overall choose an orignal dunlop or vox wah. and from those two classic wahs i would have to admit vox wah is better, although does get a bit trebly/twangy for me. You my friend have good taste. ow ya also experiment with some reverb from ur amp. don't get a reverb pedal. unless u want a very specific reverb. hope my advice helps. |

| Re: starting down the road of effects, need input I know im going to sounds like a Gilmour fanboy (well, actually I am), but the MXR Dynacomp is a really nice compressor.. I really dislike the Boss COmpressors. I just bought a DD6 over the internet and it should be coming any day now. Hopefully that are good.

| Re: starting down the road of effects, need input Thanks guys! I have been leaning towards the Vox wah, it's good to hear it's a good one since I only thought it looked cool! That does it for delay- the DD-6 will be mine. As with the Fuzz Face. My only remaining quandry is that concerning the echo from Echoes...I too am admittedly a Gilmour fanboy, so the MXR Dynacomp will have me "Shining On" well into the wee hours out in the barn next summer... btw, I've been using my Frontman 25R as a practice amp for awhile now, but since it's a good chance I could put a band together in awhile with people I already know, I'm getting a Fender Hot Rod DeVille for Christmas...gotta have the tubes man!

That would be Billy Gibbons...... All the products mentioned so far are all great choices... I really can't add anything.. I do like my Digitech RP200. Many effects in one package.. with amp modeling.

| Re: starting down the road of effects, need input I recommend the Boss DS-1 as a full-on distortion. Except that it hums a lot, but that's not noticable when you're playing, and if it bothers you enough, you can send it off to get modified (like I'm about to do with mine). www.analogman.com |

| Re: starting down the road of effects, need input For distortion I would advise against the Muffs. They are much harsher than any of your listed favorite tones. It also depends on what kind of guitar you are playing. Boss effects are awesome. I have a DD3 delay, and I am plenty happy with that. A great distortion that can also be used as a clean lead booster is the blues driver. I tried one today and had to hold myself back from buying it! For Floyd stuff, I would recommend it, especially if you don't have much in the way of EQ's and limiters to change the sound on other pedals. The Blues driver sounds great and is very versatile. The tone knob allows you to switch it from Clapton's "woman tone" all the way to the harsh, bitey tone from "Money". Great pedal! Give it a shot, and if you don't like it, don't buy it |

| Re: starting down the road of effects, need input I use a Crowther Audio Hot Cake to distort my sounds, it works great as mild warm overdrive, a clean boost or as a thick fuzz. After that comes the wah wah (535Q crybaby) AND THEN!!! a foxrox electronis Captain Coconut2, this pedal has a octave-fuzz, fuzz and a Vibe/chorus. The fuzz and the Hot Cake combined, gives ALOT of sustian! Add a little DD6 and you will pretty much sound like gilmour. |
