Mystery Recording and Household Utensils

Floyd Friends,

While on the subject of "Greatest Hits" and unreleased recordings, why hasn't that song (or album) composed with household appliances been released? Do any of you have any recordings of this? Would you even want to hear such a recording?

In addition, I have a boot that has a strange synthesizer (VCS3) composition on it. Do you all know when this was recorded and for what? Sounds a little like One of These Days, but played on a VCS3.

The "Household Objects" album never came to fruition due to the inordinately small amount of usable material that came of the original sessions. Due to none of the object being actual designated musical instruments, it simply took too long to "calibrate" them and render them workable. However, if you listen to the song "Shine on you crazy diamond", about 4.14 into it, you can hear several glasses (filled with varying levels of water) being "played". This was the only thing from the original household objects idea that found it's way to vinyl.

wow. i never heard that about SOYCD. i'll have to take a listen. i thought the "household objects" project was just an idea was never actually recorded. i can't imagine the difficulty in composing music with such objects.

Dave: "If you tap a wine bottle across the top of the neck you get a tabla-like sound close up. Or you can fill it party with water and do the same thing and just tap it in the conventional way.

"We used rubber bands: we actually built a long stretched rubber band thing (about two feet). There was a G-clamp one end fixing it to a table and another G-clamp at the other end fixing it to a table. There was a cigarette lighter under one end for a bridge and there were a set of matchsticks taped down the other end. You stretch it and you can get a really good bass sound.

"Oh and we used aerosol sprays and pulling rolls of Sellotape out to different lengths - the further away it gets the note changes."

Dave, on why it wasn't released: "Well... I mean, it seems a bit pointless to do it unless you're doing a whole album. To us it seems a bit daft, anyway.... It'd be very jard to make any of them really work as a piece of genuine music out of context..."

Roger: "...there was an abortive attempt to make an album not using any musical instruments. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it didn't really come together. Probably because we needed to stop for a bit."

Of course, if any of the tapes somehow survived, we'd all love to hear 'em :smile:

Maybe it's whatever Roger is playing on the Live at Pompeii video, the thing where he's using the VCS3 and afterwards says to someone he wants to record it or something like that. It was pretty cool, whatever he was playing. (I sure hope it wasn't from a Pink Floyd song, cause I'll have sounded really stupid.)

No,no Radiochair, but that was a good guess. It is a strange song that sounds like "One of These Days" but played on a VCS3; it is nothing like the Pompei VCS3 diddy that Roger plays in the studio. Ever heard of it?

I just found out that this piece is not by Pink Floyd. It is called "Portrait of Jaacov Agam" and was composed by Adrian Maben, the guy that did Pompei. Apparently, he composed a synth piece based on One of these days. Weird stuff, but not the Floyd. It is available on the following bootlegs:

I wish I had the technology and equipment to do that. Sorry for the inconvenience. Does anyone else out there have the means to do this or the recording discussed? Thanks for the suggestion though. I guess I will have the gear one of these days....

If you have this on CD or CDR, you can simply get a ripper and encoder from http://www.download.com

Use the ripper to take the track off of the CD and store it as a .wav file on your hard drive. Then use the encoder to turn it into an mp3.

To distribute your recording you can set up an FTP server on your computer, provided that you have a steady connection to the internet using Serv-U FTP. Of course you can also distribute your file on any number of file sharing programs such as Morpheus, iMesh, or any one of the numerous Gnutella clients.

Though only three tracks for "Household Objects" were recorded, the effect of the whole idea and concept can be heard on both parts of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." (i.e. a wine glass thingy, I can't explain it. A guy runs his hand over a bunch of wine glasses and it makes that weird but cool sound. I hope you know what I mean.) Listen for it at the very beginning of the first part and end of the last part.
