Just because it is the enemy of progressive rock and overall musicianship, I must take a contrary position to it. But there is some proto-punk stuff that I gotta say is not bad like Velvet Underground.

Old school punk is generally pretty good... The Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc

The Dead Kennedys are pretty cool, too. I do like some other, smaller punk bands as well.

I do.
The Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones, Gang of Four (although their status in the punk genre is questionable), Hank Earl Carr and the Exploding State Troopers (local), NOFX, Rancid, the Dead Kennedys

Punk isn't exactly about the musicianship, it's about the message and the overall 'feeling' of it. And besides, 'Never Mind the Bollocks' is one of the best-recorded albums I've ever heard.

I do not enjoy punk music much at all, and i despise the whole punk "movement". The entire concept is ****ing stupid. Its an oxymoron. Punks are a group of people collectively trying to be individuals. Say that to yourself a few times, and you realize the stupidity of it. Punks themselves can't even define punk and are always saying anyone else who calls themselves punk are actually not punk. when asked what makes them punk and someone else not punk they usually hit you with the "you just don't understand" line. god they are worse than goth kids.

anyway the clash is OKAY...sometimes

Yep, same here. I like the old school punk. The punk music now, it's just to mainstream and pop.

Liking punk is being yourself. Dressing like one is an option. I, for one, believe that you can proclaim yourself 'punk' but not exploit it, i.e. "Oh, I'm better and more legit than you because I'm punk". Being a punk doesn't make you a better person than the next guy, which is what a lot of 'mall punks' think these days (they seem to think that alternativeness and looking different makes them legitimate, which is bullshit).
Punk, to me, is a style of fast music meant to show agression or protest, in any kind of manner. Punk does mean a different thing to many people, so there's no real 'definition' of it. Punk is whatever one gets out of it. So, even asking for a common answer to 'what is punk?' is kind of dumb.

Yes, I like punk even though it's the enemy of two genres I enjoy (prog rock and metal). Like every genre, there are good punk bands and there are bad punk bands. You just have to open your mind.

Yeah, i like both Punk and Prog Rock, and I can't see any problems with that. Sexpistols aren't that cool, but the Clash were pure geniuses.

Let me just mention London Calling, every single song from that album gives me the jumping up and down - chills that only really good punk can give me. And what about Rock The Casbah? It's art!

I like Sex Pistols. I know that they aren`t any geniuses, but I sometimes listen to them.

Finding individuality in a group isn't stupid at all. That's like saying it's impossible to vote Republican and think for yourself. You're expressing individuality by opposing the mainstream, is all.
