Mark Knopfler is an absolute genius....

I recently picked up Knopflers new CD "Shangri-La". (It's excellent, get it..)

The second cut on the disc is a tune called "Boom-Like That". Only a genius of Knopflers calibre could have pulled it off.

I had given it a cursory listen when I first brought it home, a real toe tapper. I liked it from the get go, but only today as I was driving to work did I pay attention to the lyrics.

Now most great rock songs have themes like Love, Hate, human relations of some sort, drug issues, etc...

Only Mark Knopfler could have written a song about the history of Ray Kroch and the beginnings of McDonalds.

I about died.. This song is a classic Knopfler/Dire Straits ballad about Ray Kroch and how he bought up a San Bernadino burger joint and started the largest fast food chain in the known universe...

Unbeliviable.. It's just sheer unadulterated genius...

GREAT Song........

My guitar teacher showed me a few Dire Straits song back in the day. Brilliant stuff. I saw Knopfler on Conan (I think, maybe Leno), and he was amazing! After the peformance I said "who is that guy he's awesome!" and I found out who it was. I'm going to pick up that album soon.

Fulghie - You'll remember that I put up "Dire Straits" as underrated. I think what I also meant was "Under appreciated".

Of all the rock bands of yore, how many have heard of Knopfler or Dire Straits compared to Floyd, Doors, U2, Who, Rush ?

A lot of their live stuff is absolute genius (peronally, I think that the "On The Night" comilation has some of the finest versions of their work yet). I also remember you recommending this CD. It's on my "Wish list" as I don't even have cash to buy a nail right now

I recommend you start with the Dire Straits' self-titled album, which is their first.

I heard Boom Like That a few days ago and was also impressed.
I'm getting Shangri-La as soon as I get near a CD store.

This is one of my favorite albums to listen to in the dark, with headphones, volume cranked up---it puts me in the front row --

Knopfler seems to put something extra into his live stuff.

Re: Mark Knopfler is an absolute genius....

I have all DS/MK albums, my favourite DS albums are still the first two: Dire Straits (I love especially Lions) and Communique. The live albums Alchemy and On The Night are great as well. Knopfler's solo work is generally less rock-star and more heartfelt IMO. He produces gems on every of his album such as Hill Farmer's Blues, No Can Do, Boom Like That, What It Is.... And yeah, Princess Bride is a great movie with MK soundtrack, same as Local Hero and Wag The Dog.

Great music and definitely underrated.

So true.

Take "Golden Heart", for example -- Vic & Ray, Done With Bonaparte, Rütiger-- among others. Songs most people have never heard.

I like playing the guitar bridge from Rütiger. Simple, but so soulful.
A microcosm of Knopfler's style.

I haven't got my copy of Shangra La yet. Best Buy was sold out.

BTW, hey, Neshie!

Golden Heart is the MK album I listen to most often, all songs great. Fantastic moods.
