Does Anyone Know What Paint Box Is About?

I know many fans of Floyd and from biographies I've read, Rick Wright himself regrets writing it, but I have to say, for some odd reason 'Paint Box' is one of my favorite songs of all time. Along w/ Julia Dream and Cymbaline. I like the distant, dreamy, somber sound of all 3 songs.

Anyways, I've never been able to find information anywhere on Paint Box and I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas of what the lyrics mean, or why he wrote it. That and any other comments about the song at all.

Does anyone else out there like Paint Box?

I cant say Ive ever heard 'Paint Box', but I do like Julia Dream, do you know why he regrets writing it?

Being a Wright fan I like Paintbox, even if it's clearly not one of his best efforts. Yet I definitely enjoy the song. That's the description of a night out with a girl and the following day, a picture of daily life and one of the first floydian attempts to write about communication failure in relationships. With some inspired moments. "I open the door to an empty room then I forget"

I read in a biography book I had before, Wright said if I recall correctly that Paint Box was a poor effort at writing, that it was almost a joke of a song.

I completely disagree!! When I listen to it, the faded, dream-like sound puts me in a particular state. Especially the 10-20 second piano fade at the end. Aghhh! I love it!

One definitely has to be in a particular state of mind to listen to it...and other Floyd songs to appreciate properly, I don't believe they're just something that can be listened to on the radio casually.

Yeah, Paitbox is one of my favorite Wright songs, second only to Remember a Day. I don't know why he doesn't like it.

I really like Paintbox also. I was glad to see your post because none of the Floyd members or thier fans seem to give it any credit at all.
