| ok ok, let me first define what qualifies as a band: you're not in a band unless you can play an instument (that disqualifies nsync, backstreet boys, etc). plain and simple. now if theyre any good...thats harder. its really in the ear of the beholder. there are many different styles. but in my opinion 95% of modern rock sucks. please note that im saying this as a 15 yr old. agreeing with the earlier posts, i think these days most bands arent making music out of passion...its all about the all mighty dollar. the music industry (and mtv, radio stations) trys to isolate the youth, musically, to only whats current, so certain bands become popular, thus generating lots of $$. i think if kids my age were really exposed to good music, then comercialism would fail, because 80% of them would stop listening to the modern crap. thats my theory anyway. |

| I have an elimination process: If the vocals suck, I won't listen to the music. If the music sucks, I won't listen to the lyrics. If I don't listen to the lyrics, I will not like the song. If I don't like the song, I think it sucks. |

| I agree with everything W'ikky said.. Unless the singer is really hot, and has a nice rack.. Then all bets are off. |

I almost never switch on Mtv, because all the songs sound the same on there, though once in a while you get something cool on VH1, like Robert Randolph and the Family Band! now that's some wicked slide guitar action going on there! Some patient browing on mp3.com sometimes yields some cool undiscovered bands, like this one: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/369/akacia.html I think that this band's got some potential! |

| Despite everything that as been said and done there is such thing as good and bad music. People can have good and bad taste....It's obvious...If a band recorded a 4 minute song that just comprised of a hammer hitting a chisel it would be s**t, some folk would like it because of its humour values but thats not appreciation of music. - a good song is something our senses don't find grating or offensive something everybody can like regardless of taste...lets say Bo rhap by Queen there's something for everybody on it for starters and secondly Freddie vocals are so endearing for the first 3 minutes you can't help but feel drawn in. I suppose its about awareness of music and how it moves you...todays music is so image driven it's hard to decipher good from bad because there's so little artistry. - it's either loud or fleshy. |

| Why do you always try to bring it back to how we perceive music? That isn't what people are disgussing. We don't want to know what qualities audio waves must have in order for them to comprise a "good " song. All we are discussing is musical taste. |

| You'll drive yourself mad trying to talk sense or reason to that particular member, Mother. Best just to overlook his ravings and discuss the thread as normal. |

As for bad rock n' roll, I'd take modern rock any day over some of the "rock" from the 80s. Some, mind you. |
