You know all this new music coming our that (in my point of view) is giving rock a bad reputation. I mean, how in any reasonable world can we compare Pink Floyd to say, KoRn or Staic-X? And please don't start putting that all rock is good rock, because both you and I know that is SOOOO not true. So anyways, put your comments, views, line of curse words, whatever floats your boat on this subject.

I'm 31 and I don't wanna sound older when I say this but......the bad rock is...the new rock. It all sounds the same. Line up: A vocalist, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer. The songs (all of them): mello intro, heavy chorus, mello verse, repeat heavy chorus, heavy exit. The vocalists all sound the same. That's just my opinion, though.

MetalBabe,

There's no point on Earth comparing today's musical offerings to anyone in the past. Could you honestly compare Mozart to Pink Floyd?

They're two different musical forms from different times aimed at different audiences whose sensibilities are as different as night and day. No point.

I remember a huge row I had with a fellow GI long ago on who was a better guitarist: Glen Campbell or George Benson. An impossible, nay, pointless comparison. The two are totally different beings with different sets of perspective and target audiences.

If I had kids, they would probably hate Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, etc. just because I like them and because I'd probably hate whatever it was they'd be listening to. It's generational and ultimately subjective.

Bad music(of any discipline) = any that causes its audience to die or kill or to do either.

i'm sure you could find some kind of comparison to mozart and pink floyd (though i can't think of one right now) i'm only 18 and i think most new rock is not as great as classic rock. there are just certain things missing that should be there. but i don't want to get to into it.

Bad rock? Hmmm... Bands who try to write singles. You know 3rd Eye Blind, suck. Goo-Goo Dolls, SUCK. Matchbox 20, REALLY SUCK.
That crap is just a bunch of dorks who are trying to get chicks moist. I hope no guy actually listens to that. Strait guy I should say. Blink 182, they are Green Day part 2. I will just call this all, wuss rock. It's not really rock but, if you like it, more power too ya.

BoaB--You say that you think if you had kids, they wouldn't be into the Floyd...but we certainly have younger members on our discussion board. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were introduced to the Floyd by their parents! I think that PF is proving that its work is timeless. And THAT is one of the marks of greatness.

I may not have any, but I have had the great pleasure (?) of watching - and often caring for - several nieces, nephews, cousins and little brothers grow up and have observed that as a general rule, children will despise anything their parents like. Just to be awkward.

I think those who do not, are very much the exception to the rule.

I'm young, and my parents didn't introduce me to Floyd.
Actally I introduced my parents to Floyd. And they actually... didn't like it much.
But when my 80-year old grandpa listened to "Us and Them" he actually LOVED that. He was amazed. Really.
Don't get me wrong-my parents didn't like that senseless part of Atom Heart Mother.
But my mother kinda liked SOYCD.
Very weird, isn't it?

Good music: Music from the heart, from the soul, with a meaning and a goal (even if it'S just to have a good time)

Bad music: Music that is just made in case of earning money and that doesn't comes from the heart.

You/the artist have to belive in the thing he does....

I was introduced to PF by my dad. He suggested that I buy the dsotm about a year ago so I bought it listened to it and loved floyd ever since. It seems weird I have only been a floyd fan for a year because I have listened to so much PF. My dad and I have pretty similar taste in music. Anyway I do think the rock now does lack, it is very rare to here a guitar solo now, and when I do hear one it usually sucks. Although I guess I am from this "era" there is not a whole of music now that I like, accept for creed. Nobody knows how to play a guitar anymore.

It seems like every five years or so, a new band with an innovative and new sound shows up. Within 6 months a flock of pretenders come out, case in point, Nirvana followed by bands like Blind Melon, etc. The innovators are usually the good band and the pretenders are almost always the bad bands.

I thought Blind Melon were pretty good. And I honestly never found them to have anything in common with Nirvana.

Incidentally, what do you call someone who lives a short and rude life?

"Kurt".

Cheers!

I also listen to a lot of bands my dad did way back when, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Floyd...etc.

Oh, and I don't think you can really listen to the Goo Goo Dolls' song, "Name" and say that it sucks. If you do you're being obtuse.

I agree with Eug'axe's post from a few months back. You can usually tell when the music is coming from the heart...and that's generally the best.

I also prefer more instrumental / extended music. I'm a bit of a Dire Straights fan for that reason.
