Kids from ABITW sue for unpaid royalties

Quote:
Former schoolchildren who sang on Pink Floyd's 1979 single Another Brick in The Wall have begun action for unpaid royalties.

Royalties expert Peter Rowan said he was appealing on behalf of one former pupil and was working with others.

The 23 then teenagers from north London have been unable to claim royalties as they recorded their vocals in secret.

The single with its chorus "We Don't Need No Education" became a children's anthem and was a UK and US number one.

The album The Wall, on which the single features, sold more than 12 million copies.

The album was also turned into a semi-animated 1982 film, starring Bob Geldof of as a pop star who descends into madness.

Mr Rowan said: "They (the former schoolchildren) are owed their money and we lodged the first claim last week. I've been working on it for almost two years."

'Scandalous' lyrics

The then pupils from Islington Green School, north London, were taken to a nearby recording studio by their music teacher but without permission from the headmistress.

On hearing the song, she banned the pupils from appearing on TV or video, meaning they had no proof of their involvement on the track.

The lyrics "We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control, no dark sarcasm in the classroom -- teachers leave them kids alone" were also described by the Inner London Education Authority as "scandalous".

The school was paid £1,000 and later given a platinum record of the song but the pupils were paid nothing.

The usual bullshìt from people avid for money, à la Claire Torry. 25 years later, come on, is just ridicolous. "Grab that cash with both hands" indeed.

Agreed.. reminds me of the law suit here, where a woman sued a tobacco company for getting lung cancer.
People will do anything for money these days

cheers

I may be ignorant but royalties should belong to the one who writes the song, not to the one who plays/sings/etc. Unless different agreements of course, but I don't think this is the case as RW & co. aren't so stupid.
Those former children should only be paid for their chorus performance (if they haven't been yet). But the royalties of ABITW are a different matter.

The whole thing is just bollocks, if you don't ask for royalties in the first place you don't get them and that's all there is to it.

This is pretty old, I first heard about it on the commentary for the Wall DVD, which was done in 1999, I think. The kids each got a copy of the Wall album, and are on a best selling album that millions will listen to, I think that is plenty.

I wonder if there wasn't anyone responsible for those children at that time...

Unhappy Re: Kids from ABITW sue for unpaid royalties

I don't agree... The kids who sang the song, how could they know about the whole stuff?
It's not because the song is written by the composer that the singers should not have any royalties.
Each partakers must be paid, not only with a record or tips but fully.
And Clare Torry was right to claim that money. They all contributed to PF's fame.

Re: Kids from ABITW sue for unpaid royalties

In Clare Torry's case, some feel that she should have been given a composer's credit, which would have netted her far more than the standard session musician's fee.
