Stoner or Genius?

i can never find the right answer for this question.
did they do drugs when they were writing there albums, did drugs influence them to make amazing music, or were they just musical geniuses? if so, what drugs did they do?

Syd Barrett did a lot of LSD, but not while recording or writing, as far as we know. None of the rest of them did either. You don't need drugs to make music, nor do you have to be a genius. Some people find that drugs help their creative process, others (like the Pink Floyd) find it hinders or stops creativity altogether.

On the Pompeii DVD Dave says "many people think we're a drug oriented group. But of course we're not. You can trust us" or something like that.

You don't have to be stoned to make trippy music.

I just notice you say that a lot, Dert...

Being stoned can aid in jam sessions, but it definitely does not help when you are trying to put together a structured piece.

Well they hardly did pot, but mostly Acid, shrooms, and a few other Psychedelics. Drugs in my opionion can create a momentary creativeness. When tripped words just slip out and lyrics are so easily written, then when normal again perfect lyrics. As is making riffs, and as said before can aid jams. You just relax forget and do whatever u want without any mental intrusions. But there is the bad side to drugs. You start getting used to drugs so much, that u actually start to depend on them to write music. So really drugs later do hinder creativity. But for short time beings, or occasionally, drugs are not bad, unless u do shit beyond pot, lol. And no it wasnt the drugs that made pink floyd. From their stuff from More to OBC, i really dont think drugs helped them that that much. The only albums that drugs helped floyd really were Dark Side, Piper, and ASOS. Sure they were opened to atmoshperes that would later inspire floyd to right the songs. But really if david and the rest of the crew had hardly any knowledge of advanced theory, harmony, and equipment i surely doubt they would of been much. Drugs were just a little flavoring on top of there vast knowledge of music. As for syd well, he was like 40% Genius, 60% Lsd. I have tried pot and only pot a few times (13 to be exact. And ya it was cool and fun , and helped in music. But i being very alert, realized that these drugs were fun for a while, but if i get hooked im gone for sure.So i stopped and have been weed free for two months already. So finally FLOYD did not need vast amounts of drugs to create their music. Floyd 80% genius, 20% Drugs.

Actually they did do pot, and drank, more than they did the psychedlic stuff (excluding Syd of course).

Actually I'd argue the opposite: that their more structured work on DSOTM and ASOS was the result of sober experimentation and careful craft rather than the more unpolished and hazy parts of their work in between (which suggests at least some pot use, but not enough to really justify the "20% drugs" label IMHO).

nice point Botley, ya i would have to agree up to some degree. But are you sure they were kinda sober during ASOS. Cause some of that album is very very out there.

Never disagree with Botley. He's like that guy from "I Am Sam" who always talks about movie trivia.
