| http://www.amstadt.com/tblarchive/VO...399/bl329.html Date: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 09:46:04 -0700 From: KCoryat [at] mfi.com (Karl Coryat) Subject: Roger Waters Karl Coryat from Bass Player here. I wrote a retrospective on Pink Floyd's Animals several issues ago and was surprised to hear from David Gilmour himself. I had mentioned Gilmour's bass playing on "Sheep" (which is fairly well known) but thought Roger Waters had played on "Sheep." I also mentioned that David had dissed Roger's playing in the press several times before. I agree "Pigs" is a great line well performed, but sadly it isn't Roger. (Funny that Gilmour describes bass playing as a "chore.") - -- About your Classic Revisited piece on Pink Floyd's Animals [March '98]: I don't think I ever described Roger Waters's bass playing as "horrible." If I did I must have been having a bad day. He was a good bass player when he wanted to be - which he often didn't - and when he didn't he often asked me to take over the chore. On Animals Roger played bass on "Dogs" and I played bass on "Sheep" and "Pigs." Most of the bass line on "Sheep" (apart from the ending) was what Roger had been playing onstage, as we had been performing it as "Raving and Drooling" for a couple of years. However, in the studio Roger had a rhythm guitar part he wanted to play, so we swapped roles. On "Pigs" the part and the playing are mine.

| Thanks WG, I always suspected "Dogs" had Rogerish bass.

| I never really heard any bass playing from Roger that would rank as extraordinary. The line from "Set the Controls" was of course infectious, and there was some good bass sounds on "One of These Days" and "Sheep" but I never really heard any flexible or notable bass work on a Floyd recording until "Delicate Sound of Thunder." Sorry. |

| Re: Roger's best bass work It's maybe not his best bass work, but I like the Roger provides the rhythm on "The Gnome". I think Roger strength as a bass player was when he made easy and catchy bass riffs like "Money", "Set The Controls", "Another Brick in the wall II" and "Dramatic Theme". I also like his performance on "Breathe" on Live 8. He did a few mistakes, but I've never heard and seen him enjoy his instrument in the same way before. Dave's best bass performance IMO is "Pigs". He also plays "Not Now John" well, but I don't like the bass sound on that song. Last edited by Hove; 09-18-2005 at 08:57 AM. |

| Re: Roger's best bass work It used to be Roger, back when the song was called "Raving and Drooling," then Dave (and in 1977, Snowy White) started playing it when they changed the name.
