Pink Floyd/The Pink Floyd?

I've often heard the band being referred to as 'The Pink Floyd' but I've always called them 'Pink Floyd'. Was there ever a time when calling the band 'the Pink Floyd' was correct?

Which name is correct?

They were 'The Pink Floyd' until Syd left, and since then it was generally 'Pink Floyd'.

I thought they were 'The Pink Floyd' until Piper. On the Piper album it says 'Pink Floyd'. I may be wrong.

I've got a European vinyl compilation that calls them 'The Pink Floyd', and there's little ads for other albums on the back: Piper, ASOS, More, and Ummagumma. All of these (except for More, oddly enough) credits The Pink Floyd.

The 'Arnold Layne' single credits The Pink Floyd, but 'See Emily Play' and 'Apples and Oranges' drop 'The'.

It seemed like 'The' stuck mainly to the Syd era and to European releases until about 1969. My American copy of Ummagumma credits Pink Floyd and so does my copy of More. Later releases - OBC, Meddle, AHM, Dark Side - of course all credit Pink Floyd.

The "The" in "Pink Floyd"

I noticed this when I read Nick Mason's book "Inside Out". Some of the pictures of earlier promotional posters billed the band as "The Pink Floyd".

I don't know why or when they dropped the "The" but I think it was for the best.

Of course. Otherwise nobody could ever ask "which one's Pink?".

I don't think there's any particular point in time at which they said, "right, let's get rid of that pesky definite article," they just shed it gradually over time and still occasionally refer to themselves with it now and then.

Anyway, "who gives a f*ck?"
