Thumbs up I actually like Ummagumma

for the most part, I do find this to be a good and highly underrated album.

I don't care for Sysyphus at all, any of the parts. Nor do I care for the Vizier's Garden Party...any parts.

What makes Ummagumma worth purchasing, to me, is the spectacular live side of the album, as well as the following studio tracks:

Grantchester Meadows:
To hear the bird sound that was recycled on numerous later tracks.

Small Animals Grooving with a Pict:
to hear the experimentation in sound effects and have a laugh. A rather entertaining track.

The Narrow Way, all parts:
Beautifully done intro, this song introduces the first of what will eventually become the "sound" of Pink Floyd. I find this track to be a hint at what is to come on Meddle, and later, Dark Side of the Moon.

But even if I'd have to pick only one reason to buy Ummagumma, The Narrow Way would be it. It makes the album worth having.

It certainly has it's moments.. I'd agree with most of your assessment.. I'm glad I own it.

I agree very much with Dark Blue Ummagumma is a highly underrated album, with many hidden gems, including the ones he mentioned. One of my faves.

Re: I actually like Ummagumma

Ummagumma is one of the last floyd albums I heard because I heard it was horrible. When I finally got it I wasn't expecting much but, to my surprise, I found it quite enjoyable. The live album is really great, it's one of my favorite bus-ride-to-school albums. Saucerful on it is amazing.
as for the studio album I don't like first and last track, I don't listen to them very often. Grantchester Meadows is really good, but I prefer the KQED version with Gilmour singing parts of it. Small animals is fun, And The Narrow Way is really the gem of the album.

I think Sysyphus is fun. It has a kind of silly extremity that I like.

It's alright, not something you really want to just listen to, you kind of have to be into it.

Re: I actually like Ummagumma

UmmaGumma is the only Pink Floyd album I don't own on CD....I borrowed the CD's from a friend and listened to the whole thing once though about 10 or so years ago and didn't care for any of it except for grantchester meadows which I recall as being an average song at best. Most of the reviews here have been fairly positive. Maybe I need to give it another listen...

EDIT: I just re-read my post. Major run on sentence...I hope my former English teachers don't browse this forum.

Re: I actually like Ummagumma

I've always badmouthed Ummagumma, but it's because when I bought it, I got the cassette, which only had the studio stuff on it. I didn't even know about the live half
'til a couple of years ago when I found out there was a 'live" part. I immediately got the live CD from Ebay, and must say it is very good.

I still maintain that the studio half is unmitigated shite.
