Dave's singing Waiting For The Worms

If he supposedly didn't sing Have A Cigar because of the negative lyrics what was he doing singing Waiting for the Worms with lyrics like "Would you like to see our coloured cousins home again, my friend?"

Re: Dave's singing Waiting For The Worms

What are you on about?

Dave didn't sing HAC because his throat was apparently recovering from something or other. I hardly doubt he would contribute to a song but not sing on it because he disagreed with its message (now that's half-assing a protest).

I cant drag up a reference but I've definitely read it somewhere (re; Dave not wanting to sing it).

Also i thought it was Roger who ruptured his voice signing "shine on..."

Re: Dave's singing Waiting For The Worms

roger was going to sing have a cigar, but was on another ego trip of his. yes, he didnt feel well enough to sing it, but he wanted the band to beg him to sing it. he said they would have to get roy harper to sing instead of him. he thought the band would disagree and continue to ask him to sing it. but it backfired on him and roy sung have a cigar. thats what happened to my knowlege.

gilmour was reluctant to sing ' have a cigar ' in the studio b/c of what he referred to as " complaining " lyrics by roger

Re: Dave's singing Waiting For The Worms

According to Nick's book, Dave didn't sing it because he couldn't do it justice. It's the same reason the Floyd never played tracks off Animals after Roger left: Dave just couldn't muster up enough vitriol to sing them.

Roger had originally envisaged Dave singing Have A Cigar. Dave's vocals weren't up to it. Roger had a go, but he wasn't up to it either.

So, Roy Harper (performing in the next studio) was drafted in. Simple, really.

And all the rest is bollocks.

Re: Dave's singing Waiting For The Worms

All versions above are bollocks.
Here's what happened:
Roger's voice was exhausted from singing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and getting his lead vocals the way he wanted them. It was Roger who asked Roy Harper to sing the song; Roy was recording an album in another studio at Abbey Road. Dave had already worked with him on this same album.

And all this stuff about Dave not wanting to sing "Have a Cigar" because of the "negative" lyrics is also bollocks: HAC has the same exact cynicism as "Money" or "Not Now John" and Dave had no problem singing those.

It's a common glitch. We usually go back and delete them when we notice double posts.

Botley also has a source for his story, Nick Mason's book. Can you tell us where your version originated?

Re: Dave's singing Waiting For The Worms

Various interviews over the years; that's like asking "can you tell us where your claim that Syd left the band because of drug use originated"? It's been in so many.
