Lap Steel Guitar: That thing on my finger

Hi, maybe you can help me. I am purchasing for the first time a lap steel guitar and was wondering what else do I need to purchase?: Specifically I'm talking about that silver thing you put on your finger that you slide up and down the guitar. Is it called a Steel Bar for Resonator, because at Amazon when I view the guitar I want to buy it says customers purchased a "Golden Gate Stevens Steel Bar For Resonator." Is THAT the thing I need to put on my finger?

Re: Lap Steel Guitar: That thing on my finger

the thing you put on your finger is generally called a slide and can be made from glass/steel/brass etc. This is generally used for regular guitar, however. Most lap steel players use a tone bar. This is a rod of steel or something similar held in the hand and slid along the strings. you can watch for technique on the gilmour in concert dvd if you have it.

anyway, both of these things are hidiously overpriced and as I'm poor and have lost my tonebar I currently use a piece of lead piping... check out whatever the american site is for jim dunlop guitar accessories, they sell slides. and www.music123.com probably do to.

welcome to the sick and twisted world that is playing lap steel guitar...

Re: Lap Steel Guitar: That thing on my finger

I use a chrome slide on my regular guitar. I believe gilmour just held it and didnt even put his finger in it. I really dont know the correct technique, but it sounds fine either way. Sometimes i just push down to hard and the string gets that annoying buzz sound
