Re: Genesis - the misconceptions

Tony Banks is overlooked. He composed Firth of Fifth(their greatest song) and not Gabriel.

Speaking of the greatest Genesis song, it isn't Supper's Ready. Supper's Ready is the longest, that's something else. It is one of the greatest though but nothing touches the brilliant composition that is Firth of Fifth.

Actually, there are some demos Anthony Phillips released, and I recall one of them sounding very much like "Firth of Filth". Make of that what you will.

Re: Genesis - the misconceptions

Talk about overlooked musicians...

There is one song (I don't remember which one) in "The Lamb..." which was written by Anthony Phillips and he didn't get any credits for that. But, also, one of the greatest Genesis' songs of all time, "The Musical Box", was almost entirely written by Ant Phillips. Go and check his "Archive Collection Volume One" and listen to the song "F Sharp (demo)" recorded in 1969...

Re: Genesis - the misconceptions

Yet another reason why Phil Collins is a complete and utter twat!

Thursday, May 25, 2006

MUSIC legend Ian McCulloch last night spoke of a "sad day for Liverpool" as it was confirmed one of the country's largest and most respected recording studios will close next week.

Parr Street, an internationally renowned complex where three Grammy award-winning albums have been recorded, is to close because the owners are selling the building.

A consortium of businesses working out of the centre has had its bid to take over the building from Hit and Run, a company part-owned by former Genesis frontman Phil Collins, rejected.

The businesses claim they were on the verge of exchanging contracts on a Ł1.35m deal but the owners pulled the plug just hours before signing it over.

Last night Thomas Lang, a member of the consortium, said: "I'm heartbroken and completely disillusioned. We were promised that if we could come up with the money we could have the studios. "That has not happened and I do not know what the motivation for the decision is."

The city's most prominent arts and music industry figures along with politicians insisted Parr Street was one of the city's most important cultural facilities and demanded the owners reconsider.

Echo and the Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch, whose management is based at the centre, said: "I'm extremely disappointed that one of the city's most successful cultural assets is being closed to line the pockets of corporate property developers.

"It is a sad day for Liverpool and its musical heritage."

The studios, which have been used by Coldplay, New Order and countless local bands, are said to have been losing money; a figure of Ł1.35 million had apparently been agreed to transfer them to the consortium but it seems like Hit and Run, Genesis' property company, wants more money:

Hit and Run is owned by three members of Genesis, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks. A spokesman for Hit and Run said: "I have been instructed to sell the property. It is the first time we have put this property on the market. We are looking for offers in the region of Ł1.6m and if the consortium wish to come back with a new offer, they are welcome to."

Well, you wouldn't want to think of Phil Collins starving to death in his old age because he missed out on a few thousand quid, would you?

Naturally, if Liverpool City Council actually cared about its local culture - rather than only embracing it as a marketing opportunity - they would by now have made it perfectly clear that no planning consent would be given to change the building into flats, but they seem reluctant to actually do anything that might upset property developers.

Re: Genesis - the misconceptions

I find it amazing that someone actually thought we cared enough about Phil Collins that this thread was needed.

Then again, I also find it amazing that this thread has this many posts in it.

Re: Genesis - the misconceptions

Up your's Phil Collins!

Local businessmen Gary Millar, Steve Macfarlane and Tom Lang have saved Parr Street Studios from closure and uncertainty. Following months of negotiations, contracts were signed and exchanged at 4.45pm Friday afternoon. In a deal funded by Gary Millar of CCUK, Steve Macfarlane from CA Software and Barclays Bank and passionately supported by Tom Lang the complex will remain open, be expanded and be refurbished over the next 2 years.

The new owners are Parr Street Studios Limited owned by Gary as CEO with Steve and Tom as Directors.

Thanks must go out to everyone who has played a valuable supporting role. In particular, to Councillors Joe Anderson and Steve Munby, Mike Taylor CEO of BusinessLiverpool and all his colleagues, Riverside MP Louise Elman, Warren Bradley, Mike Storey, The Culture Company, friends of Parr Street and 3345, Radio Merseyside, Radio City 96.7, The Liverpool Echo and Daily Post, BBC News, Liverpool Vision, Lee Heaven at Canter Levin & Berg Solicitors, Barclays Bank and all the tenants of Parr Street Studios.

Parr Street Studios is the UK’s second largest recording studios, is a Hotel, has offices for rental to the creative community and houses the world famous 3345 Private Members Club. Big plans await its expansion and its new anchor tenants so watch this space.
