Crazy muting technique Page uses

I always notice he has this muting technique and I can't figure out if it's right hand muting or left-hand muting. It has that muffled sound like right hand muting but it has that percussive scratchiness of left-hand muting. It almost sounds like he's doing left-hand muting "Half way".

It's done on chords and doublestops, like that rapidly picked part on Achille's Last Stand after the first the "Mighty arms of Atlas..." verse(Live versions), the funky licks he plays after the post-bow solo solo on D&C from TSRTS(Before Plant says "Do it!"), and Immigrant Song on HTWWW during the "Now you better stop, rebuild all of your ruins..." part before the solo.

I thought it might've been him pressing up against the lower fret and letting the string buzz on the higher one, but I'm not experienced in doing that so it sounds like crap when I try it.

It's called being a shite player. When Page mutes notes, it's because he plays sloppy. Just listen to the Heartbreaker solo. He skips so many notes it's frustrating.

Are you talking about his live soloing?Because i was watching the concert/movie 'the song remains the same', and i also noticed that Jimmy was playing rather sloppy.Theres even a part when they are playing 'dazed and confused' where he actually messes up on the solo and because of that goes directly into another song. Look for the expressions onJohn Paul Jones's and John Bonham's faces. There like 'wtf', but just go with it.Then later he does some inprovisation and then goes back into the 'dazed and confused' solo right before the part he messed up.I thot that was kinda weird.Thats also a very good concert too. They do some cool camera tricks.

You guys havent seen shit yet before you see the Live Aid concert. Its like this mini reunion without bonham. Its awful. Page plays sloppyer than ever and vocals (my brain aint functional) cant come to the hights so he sings down low and it really sounds patetic. AWFUL!

Actually that mini song was a part that was added in late '72 and evolved into a full song in itself. It was last played at Earl's Court 5/25/75. It's a primitive version of Achilles Last Stand.

The Earl's Court version from the 24'th is very hard rocking and creepy like the first few minutes of the song, where the early version from TSRTS was very classical and jazzy sounding. One of my favorites. The version from Seattle '73(Forget the exact date) is also very good.
