I hate to deliver this news, but former Beatle GEORGE HARRISON passed away ysterday of cancer(?). I just wanna say I never liked the Beatles, but I thank them for influencing some of my favorite rock groups. He will be missed.

Yes, its too bad. I always thought his contributions to the band were underappreciated by most. Kinda the Rick Wright of The Beatles I guess.

I never liked much of the Beatles' work. But when you put it this way--"the Rick Wright of the Beatles"--I wish desperately that I could have learnt more while he was still alive...

I know I can still learn. But for all of my support of Mr. Wright, I blew this opportunity? I'm very saddened...I do not know what sort of artist he was; I am sad for an opportunity lost.

My guitar gently weeps in memory of George Harrison. He was a true legend.

All Things Must Pass is one of the beautiful albums of all time--both musically and spiritually. George will be missed.

i just wanna say that i can't believe some of you don't like the beatles. how can someone not like the beatles? it just boggles my mind. i'm not judging or anything but i just thought that most people that liked good music, like pink floyd or others that were posted in the favorite bands post, would appreciate the genius of the beatles. they are just a great band.

You are so right thorin13, although when I was younger I hated them.

Beatles stuff from Revolver on was good. Don't like the whole "She Loves You" bit.

thorin13, I started this post for the memory of George Harrison, please don't criticize others. (How can anyone have a different opinion?!)

Well, I listen to Cheap Trick a great deal and they covered "Magical Mystery Tour," and I found it quite entertaining. This just goes to show, although the late Mister Harrison did not write it, how influential the Beatles were, even to those who weren't fans. Again, Mister Harrison will be missed.

Beatle George is dead. R.I.P. Beatle George.

thorin13: I'm with you, but you cannot force others to like something just because you think they should. No accounting for taste.

Perhaps one has to live through tumultuous times to appreciate some of the bubble-gum produced in those times.

The early Beatles music was indeed mostly bubble-gum, but it was NEW and unheard of bubble-gum. Moreover, it was ORIGINAL! And that from a quartet of mop-topped Scousers who'd honed their skills under rather arduous conditions in Hamburg. (BTW, I know George was sent home from Hamburg until he came of age).

It could be said they were the first, the original Boy Band. Whatever anyone says, I believe they were the architects of modern popular music without whom we would probably not have Pink Floyd and other great bands and musicians, as well as all the other rubbish out there.

George, "the quiet one" or "that bloody kid!" (J Lennon) was exceptional. He could play better than Paul or John, and in my opinion - can you tell George was my favourite Beatle? - wrote fewer but far better songs than the other two. They were pioneers, albeit with the expert assistance of George Martin.

Yesterday was filled with eulogies and testamonials from all the "talking heads" and pundits, some who knew George, others who only idolised him and the band. The general consensus was that George was just "a lovely guy. A lovely guy." One ageing hippy in New York said he was, spiritually, only one step lower than being God. Ahem - pass the joint!

One anecdote which sticks in the mind was from a middle-aged woman who said as a schoolgirl she'd run away from home to be at the airport when the lads returned triumphantly from America. She'd stayed up all night on the terminal roof with a friend, and after the band arrived, stole through the many airport passageways and corridors to confront them all with a huge pair of scissors. As she went for their "lovely black neckties - they were ever so smart looking" John stopped her and told her not to cut them, that they would give the ties to her. The man interviewing her became excited to realise that she was still in possession all four ties!

She reported that George seemed concerned she would get into trouble because she wasn't in school - she was still wearing her school uniform. She said, although her favourite was Paul, that George was just "a lovely guy." Familiar theme.

In the early 70's, my mum bought me, amongst other albums, A Concert for Bangladesh which at first perplexed me because I didn't think my mother even knew of George Harrison. Took a few plays before I could sit through the sitar music but, after a while, I began to appreciate that as well. Wish I'd kept the bloody thing now.

"Look at you all, see the love there that's sleeping..."

Within You Without You

We were talking - about the space between us all
And the people - who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth - then it's far too late when they pass away

We were talking - about the love we all could share
When we find it - to try our best to hold it there - with our love
With our love we could save the world - if they only knew

Try to realise it's all within yourself - no-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small
And life flows on within you and without you.

We were talking - about the love that's gone so cold
And the people who gain the world and lose their soul
They don't know, they can't see - are you one of them ?

When you've seen beyond yourself
then you may find peace of mind is waiting there
And the time will come when you see we're all one
And life flows on within you and without you.
