Am I stupid? Or just plain crazy?

... cuz I really don't know what to think or say!

I was walking home tonight. Had a nice one at the bar. Met my friends. Had a nice time.

Paid the bar bill (Goodness! Was that a STEEP one! ) and was walking home. Cold. Wind was blowing, so it made it double cold. Was really wishing for a cigarette and cursing the fact that I'd quit ( ) and at the least was wishing for a slug of whiskey/Rum.

I stopped at a roadside ATM to pick up cash so that I could buy some beer at the gas station. While I was struggling through the system (plus, the stupid Card wasn't American, so it never really worked properly), I see a guy stop by me. He's wearing pretty much just a shirt and a pair of jeans. I can see that he's feeling REALLY cold but he's trying his best to hide it.

After three tries at the ATM, I mutter a few oaths and give it up.

And he then says:

"Hey man! Ummm.. I hate to be a bother but I was wondering if you know anyplace where I can call a cab?"

Turns out that he's missed his ride home (about 10 miles away). I re-assure him and whip out my cell phone to call a cab. I try four cab companies I know (and also one I spotted off a pasing cab which I DIDN'T know). The minimum waiting time for a cab is 3 hours. Kinda expected this being New Years....

THREE HOURS?! What are we to do till then? While deciding this, I take of my coat and hand it to him. Guy is embarrased to hell but I tell him "It's ok. I got a sweatshirt underneath. Besides, all that liquor makes me feel a bit warm". So we try hailing a few cabs that are passing the street. None of them stop.

It's getting more and more frustrating. He then starts taking off his coat.

Me: "What are you doing?"
Him: "Naw dude! I think I'll just walk back home"
Me: "In this weather? You die from hypothermia before you even get half way there!"

So I made a choice on the spot

"Come home! I got a spare room, a bed and some sheets"

He couldn't believe it.

Anyway, cutting it short - he's sleeping in the spare room right now. And as I sit here, I think....

What was I thinking? Picking a complete random stranger off the street and letting him into my house! At 4 am in the morning! Why didn't I think of these things before I offered him a room in my house?!!!!!

So, am I stupid or just plain crazy?

Make sure he hasn't got an axe strapped to his leg while he's still asleep.

That was a genuinely good deed, Simon. If the bloke has any human decency he'll be eternally greatful you saved his life.

I think you did a good thing Simon. If it had been some insane killer, he would've probably asked to come home with you, not try to walk away. From what i know (not much) you should be safe. According to what you say, he seems like a decent fellow. Good job!

Yeah, quite a nice thing to do for someone. Especially on New Years.

Stupid? Naw. Crazy? ummm...no.

Terminally compassionate. Which is why you chose the profession you are pursuing.

Sadly, the criminal element, the Ted Bundys of this world, prey on the kindness of strangers.

Be careful out there!

Well, I suppose if he hasn't tried to kill you yet, he probably wont.

Yeah. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but you never can tell. It's sweet that you let him stay though.
