The lead guitar tone change in Mihalis

On Mihalis I always digged that build up with the very dry sounding guitar tone for the first solo and then that very ballsy guitar tone during the second solo, but I was wondering what exactly is the difference? Is it just that he changes from clean to distorted or is there more than that?

I love that transition, I think it might be quite a few distortion/compressor pedals put on full blast all at once!
