Re: Videogames!

Hmm. Well, this is how I see it: If I've got the money, I'd much rather go for PC games, but the problem is, is that I've got to stay on top of the latest video card, and various other system upgrades. You simply cannot beat the PC. As for consoles...well sure, they'll be cutting edge when they come out (I mean, this next generation), but they'll get outdated and outpaced by PCs. But see, this is the beauty of consoles: you can play whatever the hell you want, and not have to worry about upgrades. It's the poor man's gaming PC.

At the moment, I've got my self a current computer, and am capable of playing modern PC games, so I've decided to shun the console...at least until the PS3. Even then, I'm not sure.

Re: Videogames!

Console gaming is going to kill itself. It's growing too fast, it can't support it's own weight. People aren't going to keep shelling out $300, $400 for consoles and then $50 each game, unless they are a hardcore gamer or have the money. I expect gaming will get less popular again after this generation.

Speaking in my professional capacity, I will tell you that phrases like "hyperthreading" are marketing terms. "Hyperthreading" is dependent on a number of factors, primarily the willingness of the game manufacturer to buy a proprietary compiler tailored to the hardware, at a very hefty price. That is, forget about performance improvements if your game was assembled using the universally available and free gcc compiler.

Also, CPU benchmarks are meaningless without knowing precisely how they were measured; I can write a program that will show higher numbers just by simplifying the tasks I'm counting.

I'm not even going to go into the irrelevance of internal CPU clocking, other than to say that memory and peripheral bus performance is way, way more important.

I sincerely doubt that the graphics chip is anything other than an OEM from one of the major manufacturers. Besides, my 21" monitor has over four times the resolution available from a TV.

That said, gaming consoles should consistently outperform PC's, simply because they are dedicated to one function. The problem I see is that they lack software portability.

PC's will keep the advantage because of the portability issue, and because of their ubiquity; everyone needs to have a computer, but a game console's just a toy.

Re: Videogames!

This is less of a PC vs. Mac issue than a computer gaming vs. console gaming issue.

I dunno... PowerPC beats hell out of Intel.

For now, anyway. Apple's going to Intel processors, so I expect the gap to close.

PC stands for "Personal Computer"...so technically, it refers to anything that has a keyboard and mouse.

And yes, this decision to go to Intel for Apple will be very interesting. It's a little disconserting, since being the Mac person I am, Intel has always been the inferior enemy.

Not true, the Xbox-360 supports some very high-end TV resolutions, however having said that, I'd rather have a PC mointor anyday.

Anyway, PS3 is probably going to kill the Xbox-360, considering it's quite a bit more powerful, and will use Blu-ray discs as opposed to HD-DVD. Right now, the largest Blu-ray disc is a quad-layer 100GB disc, as opposed to a triple layer 45GB HD-DVD. According to Sony, the PS3 is 37 times more powerful than the PS2. That beats Moore's Law by quite some degree...

Re: Videogames!

Numbers by console producers are usually bullshit. I remember what they said about PS2 before launch and what were in fact the actual games, so let's wait for the real thing, that's the best we can do.

About the PC vs console debate it's really down to which kind of games one wants to play, power doesn't matter actually. If I want to play the next Zelda or the next Resident Evil or the next Gran Turismo - whatever - I will keep playing with my console. The same goes for the fans of RTS games, or Doom addicts, they'll be happy with their PCs. Horsepower really has nothing to do with this kind of choice.

Yeah, blu-ray coupled with the cell processor (I've been hearing some wild stuff about it, like the ability to share processor power with another computer; but who knows how much of it is realistic) will make the PS3 a force to be reckoned with.

But I've been hearing rumors that Sony hasn't decided on whether to put a HDD in it standard. I think that if Sony fails to do this, that would likely be the stupidest move possible. Every next gen console should have a HDD! This factor alone has made me question my next gen purchase (well, I'm not sure if I'll be sticking to PC), and that's saying a lot since I am a huge PS2 supporter, and an XBOX despiser.

Do you really think that a game would need 100 GB in the next few years? Come on...
