Camel

Anyone here heard of Camel? They are a great prog rock group from the early 70's. They were highly influenced by pink floyd. My dad went and saw this band, he told me about it, i researched them for a while and found out that they are a great group. They are pretty similar to the floyd sound. It's funny my dad thought this band died out because they weren't selling much. I found out a year or two ago they made a new album. My point who has heard of them, and do u like them? I do.

Is this the same Camel featuring a young Peter Frampton on guitar?

If it's these guys your talking about.....

Then, yes, I have heard of them.. but don't recall much of their music.

No Frampton in this lineup...Frampton's Camel was a different project all together.

mind yourself... old fart stepping up to bat

Back in the 70's I bought a copy their album The Snow Goose. It was entirely instrumental, and me and the rest of the pot headed pixies would lay around inhaling waccy baccy and we considered it essential listening at the time. I had a quick listen of it just now and christ it doesn't half sound dated!

I've heard some about this band...actually, I heard about them because Mike Akerfeldt of Opeth said in one interview they were one of his favorite bands. I've been meaning to check them out.

Re: Camel

I've been always intrigued by this group since I'm really into 70's prog rock but I had never listened to them so I gave them a try and I bought their compilation called "Echoes" (nice title for a Floyd fan ).

I really liked the stuff in the first of the two records which features their 70's songs ("Never Let Go" is one of my favourites). But then, in the 80's, they did some really weak stuff. I almost never listen to disc two except from a long and very nice instrumental called "Ice".

Afterwards a friend of mine lent me "Rain Dances" from 1978 and it's also a very nice album reaching a good balance between pop structures in the songs and "progressiveness" in the instrumentation and the overall sound. I think Mel Collins plays flute and saxes in that album and this is also a "plus" for me since he is one of my favourite sax players. BTW Andy Latimer is also a fine guitarist with a clean and elegant style.
