If we're talking about the original studio tracks from 1968, then I'd have to go with Set The Controls since CWTAE isn't that exciting in its original form.

However, if we're talking about Live at Pompeii, then they're both absolutely amazing, but I think CWTAE would come out slightly on top.

Set The Controls...

Well, Set the controls was the song I've heard first, and got used to it before, but when I heard Careful, i've certainly got "Axed" :P.....

The two are fab songs, IMHO.

I like both of the songs but "Careful with that Axe Eugene" affected me more. And by affected I mean it scared the bejesus out of me.

I love the tone of Set The Controls, and CWTAE is also very good, but I voted for STCFTHOTS, only because it's a little slower and cooler. I dunno, maybe I'm strange..

The riff for STCFTHOTS gets kinda annoying after awhile and the song doen't go anywhere, just fades in and out. CWTAE S-L-O-W-L-Y fades in and crecendos to the sweet ending.

Now I have only heard the Ummagumma live version of 'Careful W/ That Axe', but I have really like 'Set The Controls'

All I remember about the live version of 'Careful' is a bunch of screaming about some guy named Eugene -- it seemed like there was a lot going on. Maybe it's time for me to listen to it again.

As I said earlier, I like 'Set the Controls' -- it's a very laid back song, with a lot of bass involved. No screaming or yelling, no axes at all.

Until I listen to 'Careful' again, Roger's tune about the sun gets my vote -- for now.
