Fretboard question

i was looking through a guitar magazine and noticed that there is was two shades of maple fretboard. One was lighter, and the other was a darker more orangy looking maple. I was just wondering if they have two different names or not.

My SRV strat has the darker orangy stained maple neck that you mentioned. I don't know if there is a specific term for it. The wood on the fingerboard is called Pao Ferro, which is lighter than
rosewood.

Fulghy will know.

Maple is Maple.. The playability and quality of the wood is usually consistant. As with any "nautral" product (wood, cotton, greanbeans) there is some natural variability in color and texture. Also the finish used (polyurethane, natural varnish, epoxy) will have some effect on the finished color and look of the wood.

The Pau-Ferro that Stratters spoke of is a different wood alltogether. Pau Ferro is much harder than Maple thus making for a more durable fretboard, much like rosewood. Rosewood is becoming increasingly scarce, and very expensive. Pao Ferro is more common and more affordable.

They do have different tonal qualities as well, but a neck or fretboard wood change will not affect overall tone (and sustain) as a body wood change will.
