Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

Ablaze, dude, chill out. Anyone can use the type of pedal they like the best and if it's not the one you like, you don't have to go all pms on them, really that's a bit silly.

I never tried the big muff but that's what I'm planning on buying in the next future, sound like a great pedal. One of my friends had a blues driver, I tried it and couldn't get a cool sound out of it but he could do some pretty bitchin solos with it so I guess it depends on how you use it. conclusion, I'd love a big muff but wouldn't spit on a blues driver.

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

I own both pedals, and i like em both (I like the Blues Driver!). And i wont chill out. Because i cant stand when people misguide guitarist with nonsense. It might come as a surprise, but alot of people actually value the opinions of other people. And when people claim that certain stuff do stuff they noway can, it annoys me. And it annoys me even more when I actually own both of the pedals, and know first hand that the blues driver isnt built to deliver the amount of distortion needed for the comfortably numb solo.

Of course, I'm as always rude when getting irritated, and the is no excuse for that, but misguidence, is for me anyway, almost a crime. On the other hand, there will always be a difference in opinion, and its up to yourself to feel what you feel blalblablabla. Fact is that when comparing the blues driver with the big muff, and stating that you achive the same sound is like "insert stupid resemblance".

And the fact that the guy claiming this doesnt even own the big muff, nor the blues driver, is well...

I tell you this. The Big Muff is Mr. Gilmour's favourite pedal, and helps deliver the signature tone he gets on the Comfortably Numb solo.
At www.gilmourish.com you can read up on the exact pedals used for the song, the big muff is included, not the blues driver.

And excuse me for walking away from the thread. This is waaay off-topic.

Don't forget, you need a compression pedal as well if you want to use a big muff.

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

pk, so I tried a big muff today at the store and I must admit it's the greatest thing in the world. so I can't really blame you for defending it with all your heart, mr Ablaze.

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

Before making my next purchase (which I ironically narrowed down to a Big Muff Pi USA or a Blues Driver) I tried both pedals.

Blues driver sounded a bit too brittle and harsh for me. It basically sounded like a cheap imitation of my fender tube amp's distortion. I just couldn't get it to sound as nice as I'd been promised all over the internet.

Next I tried the Big Muff Pi. I've already had my big-overdrive sound finished for years now (Marshall Guv'Nor II!) and I was not looking for a metal-pedal or anything of the sort. But at first the Big Muff sounded like it was WAY too heavy and in-your-face. But then I stopped playing my normal blues solos and started playing one song in particular: In The Flesh. Opening riff, entire intro, the whole damn song. It was perfect. Then I started playing some Gilmour solos: Comfortably Numb, Time, Money, and the intro to Sorrow.

The decision then became a no-brainer.

Cheers!

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

I do own both pedals btw
I mostly use the Blues Driver with my compressor for the OLDER stuff... to imitate the Fuzz Face. That's what it mostly works well for. I have a Russian Big Muff that I also boost with my compressor for the newer stuff and I run them both through a ce-3 chorus and dd3. I like the Blues Driver because it has a bright tone, and when it's boosted by the cs-3 it does produce alot of distortion... for me

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

You didnt own both " I almost spent my money on it today, but I just can't afford it right now. It was on sale at Tom Lee music for 111$"

And chorus?

"I almst bought one of those today. I tried both, and didn't really like either of them. The distortion tone was much too harsh for me" You almost bought a Big Muff? And now you own both? And yes the BD-2 is good for the lighter solos.

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

I bought it two days after I made that post. The reason I didn't like it at first was because I tried it thru a much smaller amp than mine. It sounds weak by itself, but with the compressor boosting it slightly, I can get a perfect tone for the later stuff. And yes, I run it all through a Ce-2 chorus... which is set to the settings recommended by Bjorn from gilmourish and John from tonefromheaven.com. It sounds more or less like the electric mistress... good enough for me.

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

My compressor (dynacomp) really "boosts" my signal too. I've come to rely on it. I can't play clean/dirty/lead/anything without it these days!

I also own a dd3. It's what I think is the bare minimum of delay, but it's perfect for what I need! Only thing I would add is an LCD displaying exactly what delay time I'm using.

Re: Big Muff/ Double Muff

I have the Electro-Harmonix Double Muff and is ok. That, and a tube screamer will do for me.

Saludos.

Just to point out, BDG doesnt use a Big Muff, he uses a Pete Cornish distortion that USED TO BE a Big muff

"Next in line is the Pete Cornish P-2 Fuzz. This has been mislabeled as the Pete Cornish Big Muff. In fact it is similar in tone to the Muff, but has a better overall sound. Its basis is in the mids, with a very controlled break up. This pedal has extreme punch at all volumes, and a great sounding fuzz. The difference between this and the Big Muff is quality. The P-2 fuzz is built to last by rocks most proven effects guru: Pete Cornish. It is quiet when on or off, and there is no mistaking the tone from this monster when it is engaged. It started with David Gilmour's Wall board as a Custom Fuzz. This pedal was found too Bassy for use, so the P-2 as we have it today was born! This was on the '94 tour rig."

"From the SS-2, we now come to the Sovtek Big Muff PI. The Big Muff has seen a few evolutions in its time, but one thing ultimately remains unchanged: its tone. This pedal offers one of the most enormous sounding Fuzz's from a pedal. The sound is huge. In the Big Muff you find the staple of Pink Floyds guitar sound for soloing from the middle of the Animals years to present. Most notably, it was used on The Wall. Songs like "Comfortably Numb", "Hey You", "Young Lust", "Mother", "Sorrow", "Yet Another Movie" to name a few, wouldn't have been the same with out the Big Muff. When you need balls to drive your solo, the Big Muff is the pedal to chose. Nothing else is quite like it. It is bassy, yet handles the highs extremely well, and has a ton of sustain. This pedal was on the '94 rig and on his All Tube Effects board currently in use."

He actually uses both... So, your wrong.
