Re: What Did You Do Today?

Watched The Wall, followed by The Doors. Worked on an art project for Problems in Teaching Art II.
Got extremely angry at my lack of progression in said project and painted my foot black in protest. Decided that I like using my body for canvas and will continue with it later.
Talked to my roommate and her boyfriend when they came home at 2am. Went to bed, got up at 10. Got ready and walked to Wallman for a Gallery meeting. Went to lunch with my friends, and did nothing for a while. Got online and talked to this really cool poet on some stupid internet dating thing my friend made me sign up for. (Though I'm sure nothing will ever come of that just because that's how things work..ha) Then we went to Mom's for super cheap awesome food.
Came home and played Trivial Pursuit with my friends.

I've got today off (Friday) - gonna go run some errands, probably watch Pompeii, lay low - it's a take-it-easy kind of day

So far I've come to work, stared at my monitor, had lunch, picked fuzz balls off my sweater, and now I'm browsing this board hoping to find something interesting (seeing as I haven't been here in months), but have found only the same old rubbish.

Re: What Did You Do Today?

I had a really pathetic day yesterday.

I was at Children's Hospital. From 6 am. I managed to get off a 4 PM

Just 20 minutes into the shift "Code Blue!" 15 month old kid on vent assist went blue, stopped breathing and simply crashed. Almost lost the kid but we helped and kept at it for a full 23 minutes. Managed to revive him and then rushed him up to PICU. I popped my head in before I left - kid was still critical but seemed to be out of immediate danger. Had two nurses on constant attendence, hovering like mother hens.

After that nerve wracking code (my very first in a major hospital), we tried to get back to our regular "buddies" (hard to describe kids as "patients"). We had a floor full of sick, pukey kids. I had 3 (and helped with two more). One of 'em was quite stable. 16 year old with Cerebral Palsy and Autism. Kid was in for a G-Tube... wouldn't eat. Lost 10# in under 8 weeks. But he was ok. Gave me a hug everytime I entered or left his room

The other two were somewhat ok - a cranky 3 year old boy who had an inflamed appendix (and deformed foot. Had corrective surgery) and a fussy 2 month old who refused to let me put her down! Wanted constant attention ... that cute little bundle of cuddles!

Was very POed at the night shift staff! We have a tough case - he ought to be in the PICU but PICU and Step-Down are crammed full. He's a bad spastic with trachtube, vent assist and heart flutters. Night staff DID NOT suction the kid at all! His O2 levels were waaaaaaaaaaaay down and he was struggling to breathe. He had so much muck in his trachtube you could hear the air struggling to BUBBLE through! Morphine wasn't helping him and you could see it in his eyes that he was in pain (could't speak because of the trach tube and could gesture effectively because of his spastic muscles). You could read the fear and agony in his face and eyes.

That poor kid. I felt horrible - sheesh, I feel horrible just thinking about it now. Because nobody bothered to suction his trach, he has stuff oozing out of it all night long. By morning, it had hardened into a thick scabby crust. Very difficult to get it off and naturally trying to do so only caused him more pain... but it's either than or risk an infection or worse - pneumonia.

I stormed an angry note to the charge nurse and made sure she reported it to HON. This is unacceptable! Freaking 4 year old child for cripes sake!

I ended up giving the kid a nice warm soapy sponge bath. Changed his kiddie diapers. Then his Mom came in and I taught her how to use the suction in case we wern't around. I put his oxygen back and walked out... just to hear my friend's 3 year old kid screaming unconsolably.

Picked him up and "baby talked" to him. Calmed him down. Fed him a lunch of ground steak, mashed potatoes and apple juice. His Mother had gone down to eat something but she came back in tears. Absolutely hysterical. Some bum had stolen her car! Helped her make a police report and then called social services to see if they could help her out with something and regretfully, had to leave her because it was time to feed my two month old.

*sigh* Guess I just needed to vent. Day had it's ups and downs. I felt awesome that we saved that kid who coded. I wish people would start pulling their weight around and not expect the next shift to cover their ass - ok, maybe they had a tough night, but the least they coulda done was TOLD us that the 4 year old needed suctioning badly as soon as we came on in the morning and we woulda figgered something out.

Bah!

*deep breath*

Like I said, it was a pathetic day. We had five codes in all and only managed to save one kid (the first one). We lost the other four

Man, I need a drink...

Re: What Did You Do Today?

It's been snowing tons. Got over 6 inches in under an hour.

My back is killing me!

I'm sitting in my shorts, sweating rivers. I just shovelled snow out of the driveways, by ways and sidewalks of 9 houses on my street.

All of 'em retired/old folks.

Boy, are they going to be mad when they walk outside and find that there is no snow for them to shovel!

Re: What Did You Do Today?

I went to work, as usual. there, we have to listen to that horrible radio station that all my lady co-workers are crazy about (and they are in majority so we can't say anything about it), with music like celine dion and other horrible singers like her. So I was doing my stuff and I walked near a little living room, it's were the soldiers can go on weekends to watch TV and play games, and I heard a melody well known to my head...it was Us and Them. I stayed a bit near the door to listen to it but I had to run because we had a rush. everytime I would pass by the living room, I'd heard the Floyd. and everytime I had to go back to my work space, far away from the floyd, and right next to the speakers blasting celine dion. it was very painful.

Re: What Did You Do Today?

Kind of a slow day..I've been sick all weekend, but I got up around 12 today, cooked some stuff with my friend, smoked a cigarette, and then we ate and made fun of people from our uni. for a couple hours on facebook.
I came home after that, drank some wine with my roommate and her boyfriend, and went to my room to watch some television.
Not too exciting today.

Holy Thursday
William Blake

'Twas on a Holy Thursday, their innocent faces clean,
Came children walking two and two, in read, and blue, and green:
Grey-headed beadles walked before, with wands as white as snow,
Till into the high dome of Paul's they like Thames waters flow.

YES!

Over the weekend I've watched Goodfellas and Casino back to back for Soprano prep.
